  • Non-Invasive Investigation of 19th-Century Photographs

Open Access•Pierluigi Nieri, Beatrice Campanella et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2025•Referências: 2

Enrico Van Lint (Pisa, 1808–1884) was a very prolific photographer, active in Pisa in the 19th century where he had a prominent photographic atelier. He was a meticulous experimenter, investigating the evolving photographic activity of his historical period. While his early works included calotypes using Fox Talbot’s methods, he rapidly adopted the collodion processes, becoming one of the most important Italian photographers that used this techni…

  • The ‘Madonna delle Grazie’ by Andrea del Sarto and Giovanni Antonio Sogliani

Open Access•Simona Raneri, Giulia Lorenzetti et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2025•Citada por: 1

Study of the “Madonna delle Grazie” painting. • Multispectral analysis based on IFF revealed differences between underdrawing and the painted surface. • Pigment characterization performed via ED-XRF and micro-Raman analyses. The recent restoration of the painting “Enthroned Virgin Mary with Child, St. John the Baptist, St. Francis, St. Bartholomew and St. Jerome” (also known as “Madonna delle Grazie” - Oil on wood , 235 × 194 cm) carried out by t…

  • Preliminary X-ray Fluorescence Analysis of Metallic Samples from the Chovdar Necropolis in Azerbaijan

Open Access•Bakhtiyar Jalilov, Safar Ashurov et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2022•Referências: 1

Several samples coming from the recently discovered (February 2019) Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age Chovdar necropolis in Azerbaijan were analysed using the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technique. The analysis allowed a preliminary classification of the samples in eight groups based on their composition, obtained from the XRF spectra using the fundamental parameter method. A more detailed classification was then obtained using the graph clustering met…

  • Interesting Features Finder

    Open Access•Palleschi, Luciano Marras et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2022•Citada por: 1•Referências: 5

In this paper, we discuss a new approach to the analysis of multi/hyper-spectral data sets, based on the Interesting Features Finder (IFF) method. The IFF is a simple algorithm recently proposed in the framework of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) spectral analysis for detecting ‘interesting’ spectral features independently of the variance they represent in a set of spectra. To test the usefulness of this method to multispectral analys…

  • What Lies Beyond Sight? Applications of Ultraportable Hyperspectral Imaging (VIS-NIR) for Archaeological Fieldwork

Claudia Sciuto, Federico Cantini et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2022•Citada por: 1•Referências: 48

This paper discusses the use of a small ultraportable hyperspectral camera in the VIS-NIR (Visible-Near Infrared) range for archaeological fieldwork and its hardware, data processing workflows, and spectral information that can be used for in situ screening. Hyperspectral imaging is a widespread, non-destructive analytical technique used in various disciplines for highlighting invisible patterns and mapping the spectral signatures of selected tar…

  • A Multi-Analytical Study of an Ancient Egyptian Limestone Stele for Knowledge and Conservation Purposes

    Open Access•Tiziana Cavaleri, Legnaioli et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2021•Citada por: 1•Referências: 2

A multi-analytical study was carried out on an ancient Egyptian limestone stele with red figures and hieroglyphs (S. 6145) coming from the village of Deir el-Medina and belonging to the collection of the Museo Egizio (Turin, Italy). With the support of a multidisciplinary team, a project for the preservation and conservation of this stele provided an opportunity to carry out a very detailed study of the object. Petrographic and mineralogical anal…

  • Application of Reflectance Transformation Imaging to Experimental Archaeology Studies

Open Access•Silvia Florindi, Anna Revedin et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2020•Citada por: 1•Referências: 7

In this work, we present a study on experimental archaeology replicas of 170,000-year-old digging sticks excavated in 2012 in the archaeological site of Poggetti Vecchi (Grosseto, Italy). One of the techniques used for documenting and studying the sticks was the reflectance transformation imaging (RTI) technique, which allows the creation of an interactive image by varying the angle of illumination. A reconstruction of the 3D profile of the surfa…

  • The Mysteries of the Baratti Amphora

    Open Access•Palleschi, Vincenzo Palleschi•ARTICLE•Open Access Journal of…•2019

The Baratti Amphora is a magnificent silver vase, casually recovered in 1968 from the sea in front of the Baratti harbor, in Southern Tuscany. Since its discovery, very few certain information has been drawn about its history, provenience and destination. Previous archaeometric studies and the iconography of the vase might suggest a late antique realization, possibly in an Oriental workshop (Antioch)

  • Recovery of a lost wall painting at the Etruscan Tomb of the Blue Demons in Tarquinia (Viterbo, Italy) by multispectral reflectometry and UV fluorescence imaging

Open Access•G Adinolfi, Rodolfo Carmagnola et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2019

This paper presents the results of a multispectral reflectometry and ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence study on the entrance wall of the Tomb of the Blue Demons in the Necropolis of Monterozzi (450–430 bc ) in Tarquinia (Viterbo, Italy), which is a UNESCO site. The technique is based on the acquisition of a multispectral set ranging from 10 to 25 images, acquired at wavelengths between 370 and 1120 nm, with a spectral width of 50 nm per image, using …

  • X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis of XII–XIV Century Italian Gold Coins

Open Access•Monica Baldassarri, Gildo de Holanda Cavalcanti et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeology•2014

An extensive analytical study has been performed on a large number of gold coins (Norman-Swabian Augustale and Tarì , Grosso of Lucca, Florin of Florence) minted in Italy from the end of XII century to XIV century. The X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technique was used for verifying the composition of the coins. XRF is a nondestructive technique particularly suited for in situ quantitative analysis of gold and minor elements in the precious alloy. The F…
