Glory in Their Spirit

These young privates, Mary Green, Anna Morrison, Johnnie Murray, and Alice Young, came from different regions of the United States and represented…

The exigencies of World War II resulted in a massive expansion of travel opportunities for American women, both civilian and military, that formed an essential ingredient of their wartime experience. As enforced tourists, the geographical centres and states of knowledge of American women were greatly expanded as they travelled to distant and remote areas, met new people, took on new jobs, encountered different cultures and ways of life, and estab…

American Women in a World at War
Litoff and Smith discuss the role of American women during World War II. The war had a significant and far-reaching impact on the lives of women, giving them increased independence, confidence and power
Prisoners in Paradise
While Rosie the Riveter and millions of American women fought World War II on the home front, other women witnessed the war firsthand. Many of them were overtaken by Japan's military offensive in the South Pacific and subsequently held captive. Theresa Kaminski chronicles their harrowing experiences in this moving testament to women in wartime. Although most of us are familiar with accounts of POWs, few realize that the Japanese imprisoned thousa…

Will He Get My Letter?” Popular Portrayals of Mail and Morale During World War II
During World War II, US war planners recognized the powerful effect that mail had on morale both for US troops and on the "home front," and the popular image of "mail call" and efforts such as V-Mail demonstrate efforts to address this crucial point. V-Mail was photographed and shipped overseas with a speed that is remarkable even today; soldiers often had the four-by-five and one-half inch photographs of their loved ones' letters within 10 days

Both published and unpublished secondary works indicate that women have played a varied and significant role in Maine's economy from the colonial period to the present. Ja…

The spectrum of experience subjected to historical analysis has enlarged dramatically over the last decade and taken scholars to the very border between biology and social organization-the study of human reproduction. Demographers led this investigation into the private domain, carefully examining variations in fertility and presenting their discoveries in mathematical models and tabulations. Now more traditional historians are advancing into thi…
