  • An Increase in Small Flake Sharp-edge Productivity Across the Initial–Early Upper Paleolithic at Tolbor (Mongolia)

Open Access•Corey L Johnson, Tsedendorj Bolorbat et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2026

The Upper Paleolithic archaeological record of the Tolbor Valley (northern Mongolia) documents a shift in emphasis from large-blade production to smaller-format bladelet production, characteristic of the Initial Upper Paleolithic (IUP) to Early Upper Paleolithic (EUP) transition in Central and Northeast Asia. This periodization is often associated with, respectively, early dispersal and permanent instalment of Homo sapiens populations in eastern …

  • The earliest Holocene wanderers through the Gobi Desert evidenced by the radiocarbon chronology of the lakeshore settlement near the Tsakhiurtyn Hondi, Mongolia

Open Access•Przemysław Bobrowski, Maciej Jórdeczka et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2025•Citada por: 1•Referências: 2

We report a set of radiocarbon dating of prehistoric settlements located on the paleolake Baruun Khuree shores in the Gobi-Altai area, southern Mongolia. The obtained series of 11 AMS 14 C measurements on charcoal and other charred plant macro-remains can be associated with one of the earliest episodes of the Holocene highly mobile desert-adapted hunter-gatherers activities from the Gobi desert (ca. 11,250–10,500 cal BP). Exploiting a wide range …

  • The Initial Upper Paleolithic from Tolbor-16, Mongolia

Open Access•Nicolas Zwyns, Tsedendorj Bolorbat et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2024•Referências: 82

According to fossil evidence, the Initial Upper Paleolithic (IUP) refers to archaeological assemblages associated with the early dispersal of Homo sapiens across Eurasia. These assemblages are often described as exhibiting a combination of Middle and Upper Paleolithic typo-technological features or, more broadly, as a technology in progression from the former to the latter. Genetic evidence indicates that as members of our species moved across Eu…

  • Palaeolakes, caves and settlement during the Pleistocene and Holocene around Tsakhiurtyn Hundi, Mongolia

Open Access•Mirosław Masojć, Gunchinsuren Byambaa et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2024•Citada por: 1•Referências: 3

The authors present results from a new research project focusing on the prehistory of the area surrounding a vast flint outcrop in Mongolia, called Tsakhiurtyn Hundi, in the borderland between the Gobi-Altai Mountains and Gobi Desert. They present the discovery of a cave and the results of its exploration, confirming its use by Pleistocene hunter-gatherers

  • Chronology of Archaeological Complexes with Geometric Microliths in Northern Mongolia

Arina M Khatsenovich, Evgeny P Rybin et al.•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2022

Upper Palaeolithic microlithic complexes in Northeast Asia are usually included in the spectrum of non-geometric industries. Mongolia, which is considered a possible crossroads of Middle and Upper Paleolithic migration routes due to its environmental and geographic conditions, is the only exception in this vast region. The Tolbor cluster of sites in the Middle Selenga Basin contains lithic complexes with trapezes and segments. We define the chron…

  • Holocene desertification, traditional ecological knowledge, and human resilience in the eastern Gobi Desert, Mongolia

    Open Access•A M Rosen, Lisa Janz et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2022•Citada por: 4•Referências: 31

Dryland regions are particularly challenging for human survival over the course of deep time. This is true for institutionally complex communities as well as small-scale societies that have existed in semi-arid regions throughout the Holocene. This paper examines some of the successful strategies employed by small-scale mobile communities which enhanced their ability to thrive in drylands over the course of thousands of years. Small-scale societi…

  • Stratigraphy and Cultural Sequence of the Tolbor 21 Site (Northern Mongolia)

    Open Access•Evgeny P Rybin, Rybin E et al.•ARTICLE•Teoriya i praktika arkheologicheski…•2017

The Tolbor-21 site is located in North Mongolia in the valley of the Tulburiingol river. The excavations of 2014-2016 revealed the cultural sequence of development of the monument’s complexes throughout the entire length of the Upper Paleolithic. Cultural residues of the early Paleolithic, and possibly an initial Upper Paleolith from the site excavation are dated within two radiocarbon definitions: 44,640 ± 690 (MAMS-14933) from pit 1 (the depth …
