  • Semantic Differential Comparisons of Attributions and Dimensions among Respondents from Seven Nations

    Open Access•Theodore A Chandler, Carl J Spies•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1996

Semantic classifications of 11 attributes of achievement (Bias, Help, Luck, Ability, Competence, Effort, Task, Chance, Knowledge, Skills, and Mood) were compared using a 7-point scale on the dimensions of external-internal, global-specific, controllable-uncontrollable, stable (unchangeable)-unstable (changeable), and predictable-unpredictable. There were significant cross-national differences on nine of the 11 attributions. Although there were si…

  • Interaction of Creativity and Attribution in Assignment of Meaning on Retention of Nonsense Syllables and Words

    Open Access•Theodore A Chandler, Julie Shoup•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1991

What determines whether students will spontaneously employ personal control in meaningfulness? Is it related to attributional assignment and/or divergent thinking? 149 participants were undergraduate majors in education, enrolled in human development and learning. Students randomly received one of three 15-item lists: nonsense syllables, unrelated words, or related words. A questionnaire related to attributional assignment for success and failure…

  • Attributions and Affects Related to Actual Vs Perceived Success in An Actual Achievement Context

    Open Access•Theodore A Chandler, Cynthia A Seibel et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1990

The present study sought to explore Weiner's model of attribution-affect linkage using nondichotomized measures of both objective and subjective success, in a real achievement context. Contrary to expectation, attributional internality related more strongly to objective than to perceived success on three course examinations. Affectivity, as expected, related significantly more strongly to subjective success. Attribution-affect linkage accounted f…

  • Performance Expectancy, Success, Satisfaction, and Attributions as Variables in Band Challenges

Open Access•Theodore A Chandler, David Chiarella et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•1987•Citada por: 1•Referências: 5

Motivation of band members was tested by asking them if they had ever challenged for I chair positions and how frequently, if they felt they were correctly placed, what their expected performance level was for 3 months later, what degree of satisfaction and feeling of success they experienced with their current level of performance, and how much they enjoyed playing their instruments. Degree of satisfaction with one's instrument and the factors t…

  • Attributional Correlates of Beliefs on Discipline

    Open Access•Theodore A Chandler, Sonya L Blixt•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1984

  • Gender Differences in Achievement and Affiliation Attributions

    Open Access•Theodore A Chandler, Deborah D Shama et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•1983•Citada por: 5•Referências: 23

This study examines attributions (ability, effort, task, and luck) for success and failure in both achievement and affiliation domains across cultures as a means of evaluating whether gender differences are associated with cultural variations. Participants included 684 university students (314 males; 370 females)from India, Japan, South Africa, the United States, and Yugoslavia currently enrolled in teacher training, physicial science, and social…

  • Relationship between Adolescent Sexual Stereotypes and Working Mothers

    Open Access•Theodore A Chandler, Robert F Sawicki et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Early Adolescence•1981•Citada por: 4•Referências: 7

Using a modified Likert format, 438 (225 boys, 213 girls) eighth graders indicated their agreement or disagreement with 8 randomized stereotypic statements concerning women's role and 12 statements concerning women workers. In addition, students rated as masculine, feminine, or both a randomized list of 20 occupations. Results indicate sex differences in several stereotypic statements. The sex differences are more differentiated than results foun…

  • Multiattributional Causality

    Open Access•Theodore A Chandler, Deborah D Shama et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•1981•Citada por: 21•Referências: 25

This study elaborated upon the internal-external locus of control dimension in cross-national achievement research by including a measure of a stable-unstable dimension, four individual causal attributions (ability, effort, context, and luck), and success and failure conditions. Subjects were 684 university students from India, Japan, South Africa, the United States, and Yugoslavia, majoring in education, social science, and physical science. Res…

  • Anxiety and Attribution as Predictors of Non-Completion of a Course

    Open Access•Theodore A Chandler, Thurston L Cosner et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1979

16 non-persisters in an individualized mastery approach of introductory psychology in a community college had significantly higher initial state anxiety than 26 persisters, but there was no significant difference in trait anxiety. Non-persisters were also significantly higher than persisters in attributions for achievement to external context

  • Relationship between Childhood Abuse and Assaultive Behavior in Adolescent Male Psychiatric Patients

    Open Access•Hal R Blount, Theodore A Chandler•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1979

To test in part Berkowitz's hypothesis that parents who attempt to influence their children's behavior by frequent punishment appear to foster aggressiveness in their offspring . (1973, p. 114) 15 male adolescents (Group I ) were randomly selected from a state psychiatric institution. They had been admitted with a presenting problem of assaultive behavior and for these persons there was recorded evidence of at least two instances of assault while…

  • Sex Differences in Self-Reported Achievement Motivation

    Open Access•Theodore A Chandler, Bettyanne Cook et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1979

Significant over-all sex differences were not obtained for scores of 134 women and 127 men (majority aged 18 to 20 yr.), on Hermans' Prestatie Motivatie Test. A stepwise multiple regression indicated that there were significant sex differences on 3 of the 9 aspects of n Ach measured by the test, Achievement Behavior, Persistence, and Time Perspective, based upon 5 items of 29 Chi square analyses produced significant sex differences on 5 of the 9 …

  • Sex Differences in Self-Reported Assertiveness

    Open Access•Theodore A Chandler, Bettyanne Cook et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1978

This study compares the use of t tests and a more conservative stepwise multiple regression analysis of sex differences of self-reported assertion. Using this procedure, women reported being significantly more assertive than men on four of the five items of the Rathus Assertiveness Schedule, although over-all, men's scores showed men reported being more assertive. Different results of Hollandsworth and Wall (1977) and Rathus and Nevid (in press) …

  • Sex Differences in Research on Locus of Control

    Open Access•Theodore A Chandler, David A Dugovics•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1977

This study attempts to determine whether variance unaccounted for in correlations between internal locus of control and academic achievement scores for 291 males and 272 females can be attributed to sex differences in locus of control. Males' and females' responses to the Adult Nowicki-Strickland Internal-External Locus of Control, using a modified format, were factor analyzed separately and compared. The results indicate similar factor structure…

  • Relationship between Transgression and Locus of Control in Military Dependent Children

    Open Access•Theodore A Chandler•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1974

It was hypothesized that externally controlled children (as defined operationally by scores on the Bialer-Cromwell Children's Locus of Control Scale) would exhibit a higher frequency of transgression than internally controlled children. Ss were a random selection of 60 fourth and fifth grade boys and 60 first and second grade boys randomly assigned to one of three groups: (a) punishment at initiation, (b) punishment at completion, (c) control. As…
