  • Cuon Versus Canis

Open Access•Alfred Sanchis, Jean Philip Brugal et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

The genera Cuon and Canis are part of the carnivore guild during the late Middle and Late Pleistocene in Europe. However, most identifications in archaeo‐palaeontological contexts are made on cranial and dental elements as these are taxonomically the most diagnostic anatomical regions. In contrast, taxonomical identifications of postcranial remains are scarce and often based on metric criteria because of their morphological similarity between the…

  • Archaeological Lithotheques of Siliceous Rocks in Spain

    Open Access•David Ortega, A Arrizabalaga et al.•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2025•Referências: 15

The use of lithotheques, libraries or collections of rocks is relatively recent in archaeological research in Spain. These collections have mostly been formed through isolated initiatives in different institutions, without any scientific strategy to guide their development and growth. The perspective in the last few years has changed substantially as these infrastructures are now regarded as a scientific resource of great interest and potential i…

  • New insights into the Neanderthal pelvis morphology based on a partial os coxae from El Sidrón (Asturias, Spain)

    Open Access•Nicole Torres‐tamayo, M Bastir et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2025•Referências: 80

The Neanderthal pelvis exhibits distinctive features compared to modern humans, including wider and more flared iliac blades, a more anteriorly positioned sacrum, and a longer and thinner, outwardly oriented pubic bone. Each new addition to the pelvic fossil record is significant for enhancing our understanding of Neanderthal morphology and variation. Here, we present SD-1663, the most complete adult os coxae fragment recovered from the El Sidrón…

  • Subsistence strategies during the Gravettian in the rock shelter of La Viña (Asturias, N Spain)

    Open Access•Elene Arenas-Sorriqueta, A B Marín‐arroyo et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Science Advances•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 22

The rock shelter of La Viña, located on the northern Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula, contains a rich archaeological sequence dated from the Mousterian to the Magdalenian. This site preserves an extended Gravettian occupation where a diversified assemblage of fauna, lithic and bone tools has been attested. In this paper, we undertake the archaeozoological and taphonomic study of the macromammals found in the Gravettian levels X and IX of …

  • Using ZooMS to assess archaeozoological insights and unravel human subsistence behaviour at La Viña rock shelter (northern Iberia)

    Open Access•Leire Torres-Iglesias, A B Marín‐arroyo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2023•Citada por: 7•Referências: 38

The highly fragmented nature of Palaeolithic faunal assemblages is a regular limitation in archaeozoological analyses as it prevents a precise taxonomic identification following comparative anatomy criteria. In this paper, we integrate Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS) analysis of unidentifiable bone fragments within archaeozoological and taphonomic data to overcome this limitation and disentangle the subsistence strategies of Solutrean…

  • Pioneer Archaeologists and the Influence of Their Scientific Relationships on Mesolithic Studies in North Iberia

Open Access•Miguel Ángel Fano, Marco De La Rasilla Vives et al.•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2022•Referências: 3

Count Vega del Sella’s research marked the beginning of the long tradition of Mesolithic studies in Asturias (North Spain). Another pioneer, L. Sierra, explored a number of caves in Cantabria with Mesolithic shell-middens, but no specific research line was developed on this kind of deposit in the province. The early excavation at Santimamiñe Cave recorded the Basque Country’s first shell-midden, which was thought to belong to a different facies f…

  • The Llonin Cave (Peñamellera Alta, Asturias, Spain), level III (Galería)

Open Access•Marco De La Rasilla Vives, Elsa Duarte et al.•CHAPTER•La conquête de la montagne•2019

Llonin cave is located in the Cares river valley, between the sea and the Cantabrian Cordillera. In level III, hunted fauna comes from a rocky and mountainous biotope with chamois predominance over red deer and Spanish ibex. On top of this level there is an Upper Magdalenian level (II) and underneath an Upper Solutrean one (IV). Level III is formed by materials linked to fire, with a specific functionality, and there is an extraordinary associati…

OBJECTIVES: The El Sidrón tali sample is assessed in an evolutionary framework. We aim to explore the relationship between Neandertal talus morphology and body size/shape. We test the hypothesis 1: talar Neandertal traits are influenced by body size, and the hypothesis 2: shape variables independent of body size correspond to inherited primitive features. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We quantify 35 landmarks through 3D geometric morphometrics technique…

  • The costal remains of the El Sidrón Neanderthal site (Asturias, northern Spain) and their importance for understanding Neanderthal thorax morphology

    Open Access•Daniel García‐martínez, Daniel García-Martínez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2017•Citada por: 21•Referências: 64

The study of the Neanderthal thorax has attracted the attention of the scientific community for more than a century. It is agreed that Neanderthals have a more capacious thorax than modern humans, but whether this was caused by a medio-lateral or an antero-posterior expansion of the thorax is still debated, and is key to understanding breathing biomechanics and body shape in Neanderthals. The fragile nature of ribs, the metameric structure of the…

We present a synthesis from the existing data and results in some Asturian sites related, on one hand, with the chronology problems and taphonomical processes and, on the other hand, to the novelties in different matters around our Neanderthal ancestors. Additionally, we stand out the necessity to check thoroughly some important Cantabrian sites concerning the raw material types present in their lithic collections, to verify the reosive discordan…

Torres et al . (2010 ) published a series of radiocarbon, AAR, ESR and OSL dates from the site of El Sidrón, northern Spain, which is notable for the discovery of the partial remains of 12 Neanderthals. Whilst the non‐radiocarbon methods suggested an age beyond 32 600–46 300 years, direct radiocarbon dates on the human fossils were inconsistent, ranging between 10 000 and 50 000 bp . This study uses the ultrafiltration pre‐treatment protocol to o…

The age of Neanderthal remains and associated sediments from El Sidrón cave has been obtained through different dating methods ( 14 CAMS, U/TH, OSL, ESR and AAR) and samples (charcoal debris, bone, tooth dentine, stalagmitic flowstone, carbonate‐rich sediments, sedimentary quartz grains, tooth enamel and land snail shells). Detrital Th contamination rendered Th/U dating analyses of flowstone unreliable. Recent 14 C contamination produced spurious…

The raw material derives from the immediate cave environment, and is mostly chert, with quartzite in a lesser proportion. To date, 67 artefacts hav…
