"Deep Listening" in Buddhist Studies
Co-authored between a professor and student, this essay discusses how an experiential learning assignment of "deep listening" was integrated into an online course on histories of Buddhist meditation. Paired with a group art project, the work provided not only an opportunity to practice critical communication skills, but also a sense of connection and community, which is especially important during the conditions of pandemic isolation. The Food of Meditation
Beginning with stories of hunger and food magic in Tibetan biographies, I explore a dietary practice of total abstinence from material foods. Buddhist meditators are said to enjoy “the food of meditation” or “the food of the sky.” Texts teach meditators how to use visualization and yogic movement to “extract the essence” of breath and use it as food. When discussing illnesses that may be experienced by retreatants, these texts identify hunger as …
Narratives of Hospitality and Feeding in Tibetan Ritual
This article proposes that many Tibetan rituals are shaped by a language of creating, giving, and eating food. Drawing on a range of premodern texts and observation of a week-long Accomplishing Medicine (sman sgrub) ritual based on those texts, we explore ritualized food interactions from a narrative perspective. This essay will consider the relationship between eating and maintaining health or curing illness, as seen in Tibetan pre-modern texts. In particular, it will focus on selected "ritually" enhanced food practices that are aimed at treating illness and improving one's psycho-physical health and power. This paper addresses the development of scholastic medical traditions in Tibet through an examination of lists of physicians. I consider the debates that such lists and their accompanying narratives engender for Tibetan historians and reflect on the contributions they make to the identity of the medical tradition. By examining the structure and content of classificatory methods in medical histories, I argue that temporally organized lists documen…

This article considers a Tibetan anthology, the Eighteen Additional Practices ( Cha lag bco brgyad ), that includes some of the earliest indigenous Tibetan medical works still extant, and examines more closely its first text, a history of the Four Tantras .
