In the wake of the Iraq War, it has become axiomatic that the aftermath of a war should be planned for. This article disentangles the different strands woven into Allied planning for 'postwar relief' in the early 1940s. The Medical Relief Effort at Belsen
Over 14,000 inmates of Bergen-Belsen camp died in the first few weeks after the camp was liberated by the British in April 1945. This has provoked continuing debate as to whether those deaths were inevitable or could have been avoided had the medical problem of Belsen been better managed. This essay looks in outline at the evidence and shows how the British struggled to handle a humanitarian crisis for which they were quite unprepared
