A Probability Sample of Gay Males
Data are presented from a national probability sample of males interviewed by telephone and asked their sexual orientation. Of these males 3.7 percent reported that they were homosexual or bisexual. Homosexual/bisexual men were compared with heterosexual ones on the demographic variables. The hypotheses that gender-role nonconformity during childhood is associated with social isolation, which in turn is related to subsequent suicidal feelings and attempts, were tested. Data are presented on a national sample of gay bars in the United States. Analysis reveals a diversification of type of gay bars with increasing urbanization. This diversification seems to reflect an increasing heterogeneity of gay life‐styles in the larger cities.
