The emancipatory inclusion of nonhuman animals in the Dutch sustainable food system transition
There is increasing agreement among scientists and policy makers that we need transformative change, change at the deepest levels of society, to become sustainable. There is also increasing attention for politics, power relations and justice in studying and governing sustainability transitions. This attention has however largely been limited to human politics, power relations and justice, even though other animals are also stakeholders in these t…
Farmers’ drought experience, risk perceptions, and behavioural intentions for adaptation
This paper examines farmers' cognitive perceptions of risk and the behavioural intentions to implement specific drought risk reduction measures using the Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) model. We follow an innovative route by extending a PMT model with a drought experience variable, which, we hypothesize, will influence risk perceptions and the take-up of adaptation measures. In order to do so, we investigated detailed historical drought patte…
The life of an XPA-mouse. A posthumanist approach to becoming with humans in laboratory and law
This article is about mice. More specifically about several generations of transgenic mice, XPA-mice, that were born, lived and died in a Dutch laboratory where they were exposed to carcinogens to test if they were more sensitive to these substances than ‘regular’ mice. Taking a posthumanist approach, I analyze the daily lives of these mice as a multispecies choreography. This choreography involves mice, humans and technologies such as cages, per…
Adapting Scotland’s forests to climate change using an action expiration chart
The inherent uncertainty of climate change impacts is one of the main challenges for adaptation in environmental management. The lack of knowledge about climate impacts on ecosystem services at high spatial and temporal resolution limits when and what adaptation measures should be taken. We addressed these limits by assessing four ecosystem services—forest production, tree growth, sequestered carbon, and tourism potential—under drought or climate…
Coping with Food Insecurity on a Micro-Scale
This article examines the main household demographics and economic factors associated with food insecurity and coping behavior of rural households employed during times of food shortages in northern Ethiopia. Using a cost-of-basic-needs approach we estimated the food poverty line. This cut-off value was used to classify households as either food secure or insecure. Then empirical analyses were used, based on respectively a logit regression model …
An uncertainty assessment framework for forest planning adaptation to climate change
Climate change vulnerability in Ethiopia
Climate change and variability severely affect rural livelihoods and agricultural productivity, yet they are causes of stress vulnerable rural households have to cope with. This paper investigated farming communities' vulnerability to climate change and climate variability across 34 agricultural-based districts in Tigray, northern Ethiopia. It considered 24 biophysical and socio-economic indicators to reflect the three components of climate chang…
A boundary object for scale selection — Moderating differences and synergising understanding
Effect of Policy Interventions on Food Security in Tigray, Northern Ethiopia
Following the design of a conservation-based agricultural development strategy and food security strategy, the Tigray government has implemented different pro-poor development programs over the past years to address the problems of food security. This study attempts to investigate the effectiveness of government policy interventions at different scales addressed to improve food security. Food security both at the regional and district level was i…
Regional Social Networks as Conduits for Knowledge Spillovers
The purpose of this paper is to open the ‘black box’ of knowledge spillovers by testing the extent to which social interactions between firms in a region positively contribute to firm performance. Specifically, we examine the Marshall‐Jacobs controversy, a debate over whether these spillovers occur across firms operating in similar or dissimilar fields. Our empirical examination of the debate relies on a dataset that is constructed from three sou…
Flood risk perceptions and spatial multi-criteria analysis
The conventional method of risk analysis (with risk as a product of probability and consequences) does not allow for a pluralistic approach that includes the various risk perceptions of stakeholders or lay people within a given social system. This article introduces a methodology that combines the virtues of three different methods: the quantifiable conventional approach to risk; the taxonomic analysis of perceived risk; and the analytical framew…

Controversies in water management
On direct estimation of initial damage in the case of a major catastrophe
Input‐output analysis (I‐O) is increasingly used in studies of sudden catastrophes such as earthquakes, hurricanes, or, in the case of The Netherlands, major flooding. Unfortunately, in catastrophe analysis, there is no general consensus over the points of departure. Therefore, we need a basic notion of “where to start from”. One task the I‐O modeller faces after the disaster is to construct a plausible basis for the recovery and reconstruction e…
Disasters and economic damage
Tsunamis, droughts, earthquakes, hurricanes and floods are a constant threat to society. Where in the past the population at risk had to react on the consequences of disasters, at present society wants to be more in control. Due to the high costs of restoration, of the stress and of the loss of family and friends, a proactive policy in order to prevent disasters or at least to minimize the impact is required. Such a policy asks for a framework to…
A simultaneous non-linear model for labour migration and commuting
Evers G. H. M. and van der Veen A. (1985) A simultaneous non-linear model for labour migration and commuting, Reg. Studies 19, 217–229. The paper deals with the importance of interregional labour supply mobility as a component of changes in the regional supply of labour. After an exploratory analysis of this mobility (labour migration and commuting), an explanatory framework is developed based on interrelationships between these two types of mobi…
