Idiosyncratic Information and Vague Communication
This study explores why, at critical moments, governments may withhold vital information from the public. We explain this phenomenon by what we call idiosyncratic events, or events independent of the information receiver's state-contingent payoff functions. Idiosyncratic events often influence the receiver's belief on the sender's performance. If such events are correlated with the events determining the payoff functions, the sender may withhold …
Al-Bīrūnī’s India, Chapter 14
This article provides an English translation of Chapter 14 of al-Bīrūnī's Kitāb taḥqīq mā li-l-Hind. The whole book was translated by E. Sachau (as Alberuni's India) more tha 100 years ago. Thanks to the recent works by David Pingree, especially the Census of the Exact Sciences in Sanskrit, we can offer many improvements and additions to Sachau's translation. We focused our attention to Chapter 14 of the same book where we find much interesting i…
Introduction to Macroeconomic Dynamics Special Issue in Honor of Kazuo Nishimura
Over the past three decades, analysis of dynamics has come to the forefront of macroeconomic theory. A key impetus for progress on this front has been the connections developed between equilibrium growth theory, on one hand, and the field of nonlinear dynamics, on the other. Kazuo Nishimura's work has been at the center of these advances, and the lines of research he initiated remain an exciting area of study for young researchers with strong tec…
Optimal Growth and Competitive Equilibrium Business Cycles under Decreasing Returns in Two‐Country Models
This paper investigates the interlinkage in the business cycles of large‐country economies in a free‐trade equilibrium. We consider a two‐country, two‐good, two‐factor general‐equilibrium model with Cobb–Douglas technologies and linear preferences. We also assume decreasing returns in both sectors. We first identify the determinants of each country's accumulation pattern in autarky equilibrium, and secondly we show how a country's business cycle …

Al-kindī on finding buried treasure
Al-Kindī contributed to the Arabic literature on methods of finding buried treasure. His short text on the subject has survived in two forms: a Letter , and a chapter of his astrological work known as The Forty Chapters . This article includes editions and translations of both these texts, as well as of the two Latin translations made of the chapter in The Forty Chapters and comments on the procedure advocated by al-Kindī
