  • China’s real estate agents’ persuasion realizations on WeChat Moments

Open Access•Jianyou He, Dunsheng Xia et al.•ARTICLE•Pragmatics Quarterly Publication…•2025

Persuasion is a well-documented language phenomenon in the fields of rhetoric, communication, and sociopsychology. However, there is still a need for further research into persuasion on social media from a pragmatic perspective. The current research contributes to the existing literature on persuasion, particularly in virtual environments, by examining the tactics of online persuasion with a dataset of 409 excerpts from WeChat Moments. It examine…

  • A sociopragmatic study of the strategies and affecting factors of Chinese thanking responses

Open Access•Dunsheng Xia, Xiaolin Guo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Politeness Research•2025•Referências: 9

Utilizing the Labovian-style fieldwork methodology in the form of request for directions, this research delved into the nuances of thanking responses from 16 groups of 960 Chinese respondents, by meticulously controlling four distinct variables: education level (high and low), age (aged and young), complexity of thanking expressions (complex and simple), and indebtedness (knowing and telling the direction, not knowing and failing to tell the dire…

    Open Access•Huan Xu, Dunsheng Xia•ARTICLE•Language and Semiotic Studies•2023•Referências: 11

Innovative uses of punctuation in online communication have become increasingly visible in research and public awareness since the 2000s, whereas studies on the innovative use of tildes (“∼”) in digital use remain scarce. Drawing on a data set of 543 Chinese WeChat messages with sentence-final tildes, this article investigates the uses and functions of innovative tildes in online communication using quantitative data and follow-up interviews. The…

  • Variation of the winter mid-latitude Westerlies in the Northern Hemisphere during the Holocene revealed by aeolian deposits in the southern Tibetan Plateau

Open Access•Fuyuan Gao, Junhuai Yang et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2022

The mid-latitude Westerlies (MLW) are one of the most important atmospheric circulation systems in the Northern Hemisphere, exerting a huge influence on the climate of the region downwind, and thus on vegetation, water resources, and human wellbeing. However, the seasonal variation of the MLW during the Holocene is not yet been fully understood, especially when its contribution is the most important. Here, we used end-member (EM) modeling analysi…

  • (Im)politeness at a Chinese dinner table

Dunsheng Xia, Chun Lan•ARTICLE•Journal of Politeness Research•2019•Citada por: 3•Referências: 32

This article presents a detailed analysis of (im)politeness in a naturally occurring multi-party conversation and in doing so challenges the theoretical premise of dyadic communication in traditional politeness research. Informed by the classical theories of Leech (1983) and Brown and Levinson (1987), traditional politeness research has largely been framed in the dyadic model of communication, without taking into full consideration the influence …

  • Out-of-phase evolution between summer and winter East Asian monsoons during the Holocene as recorded by Chinese loess deposits

Open Access•Dunsheng Xia, Jia Jia et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2014

We analyzed climate proxies from loessic-soil sections of the southern Chinese Loess Plateau. The early Holocene paleosol, S0, is 3.2 m thick and contains six sub-soil units. Co-eval soils from the central Loess Plateau are thinner (~ 1 m). Consequently higher-resolution stratigraphic analyses can be made on our new sections and provide more insight into Holocene temporal variation of the East Asian monsoon. Both summer and winter monsoon evoluti…

  • A record of Holocene climate change in the Guanzhong Basin, China, based on optical dating of a loess-palaeosol sequence

    Open Access•Hui Zhao, Fahu Chen et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•Citada por: 5•Referências: 8

Optical dating was used to obtain a chronology for a loess-palaeosol sequence in the Guanzhong Basin on the Loess Plateau in China. The sedimentary sequence recorded two dry episodes (3.7~2.4 ka and 1.2~0.8 ka ago) in the Holocene as shown by the presence of two layers of loess within the Holocene deposits. These two arid events are consistent with records of global climate change in the Holocene and also coincident with major historic events in …
