Selective silence
This article conceptualises selective silence as an institutional outcome through which the United Nations avoids recognising genocide when such recognition would conflict with dominant power interests. The article uses the Anfal campaign against the Kurds in Iraq as a critical case to argue that UN non-recognition was the result of four recurring institutional mechanisms: agenda prioritisation, reluctance to investigate, substitution of humanita…

According to Frankl, religion maintains its existence and continues offering guidance in the search for meaning irrespective of worldly conditions or developments. Since the 19th century, secularism-initially adopted particularly by Western nations but influential globally-has significantly limited the presence of religion in public life. Altho…

The Inter-Communal Talks and Political Life in Cyprus
This paper conducts historical research on the inter-communal talks and the political life in the two communities of Cyprus from 1974 to 1983. The period covered by the research commenced with the creation of the bi-regional structure on the island in 1974 and ceased with the declaration of Turkish Cypriot Independence in 1983. As this period constitutes an important threshold in the history of Cyprus, it might be argued that observing the politi…

Towards the end of the colonial era, British ‘divide and rule’ policies had severely damaged inter-ethnic relations in Cyprus. Afterwards, the NATO all…
