Is it possible to produce a 3D stratigraphic interpretation without digging using Archaeogeophysics? The revisited case of the ancient rural settlement of Plantades in Salviac (Lot, France)
Cartography of a roman villa with “sigma” peristyle, by use of aerial photos, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and 3D radar. Confrontation of results and proposition of chronostratigraphic phases
Investigations into the Forma Urbis of the Roman city of Aquinum (Lazio, Italy)
The need of integrating different types of non-invasive prospection is demonstrated, complementary excavations are crucial for the interpretation of ancient cities
A multidisciplinary approach to the urban history of Ostia (Italy)
Research into the early urban history of Ostia (4th century BC – 2nd century AD), Recent geophysical surveys and core drillings in the excavated area of the city, New data on the palaeoenvironment at the mouth of the Tiber in the 1st millennium BC
Pushing too far? Use of 5 non-destructive methods for studying Roman towns
Cartography of a Roman town with 5 non-destructive methods: aerial, resistivity, magnetometry, two multi-channel GPR. Comparison of results. Public impact
MesoMag
investigating pyrogenic magnetism can support identifying Mesolithic land use traces, laboratory magnetometers can facilitate soil characterisation for archaeological applications
FDEM and GPR prospections at the Roman town of Ostia within the Early Ostia Revisited project
Recent research into the early phases of Ostia (4th century BC – 2nd century AD), New geophysical prospections in and around the excavated area of the ancient city, New data on the palaeo-environment and - topography of the town and Tiber estuary
D Semantic segmentation of GPR data by means of shallow machine learning
Shallow machine learning methods do not need explicit rules for semantic segmentation, Few user annotations are needed; the result can be improved interactively, Suitability for the analysis of 3D GPR data is shown for a dataset from a Roman town
ArchGeoRobot
An unmanned ground vehicle was used to perform an automated GPR survey.– The robot pulling the GPR surveyed the area without human intervention.– It remained close to the predefined path, usually with an accuracy better than 5 cm
Ground-penetrating radar survey at Falerii Novi
Our understanding of Roman urbanism relies on evidence from a few extensively investigated sites, such as Pompeii and Ostia, which are unrepresentative of the full variety of Roman towns. This article presents the results of the first high-resolution GPR survey of a complete Roman town-Falerii Novi, in Lazio, Italy. The authors review the methods deployed and provide an overview of the results, including discussion of a case-study area within the…

Detection of Buried Roman Wall Remains in Ground‐penetrating Radar Data using Template Matching
Whereas in the last decades the acquisition and processing of archaeological ground‐penetrating radar (GPR) data have become mature, the interpretation is still challenging. Manual delineation in three dimensions is time consuming, and often the determination of an isosurface value is not straightforward. This paper presents a method designed specifically for the extraction of buried linear features such as wall foundations, based on template mat…
Falerii Novi (Comune Di Fabrica Di Roma, Provincia Di Viterbo, Regione Lazio)
As part of the AHRC-funded “Beneath the Surface of Roman Republican Cities” project (2015-17), our team is pursuing a full-coverage Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey of the entire intra-mural area of the Roman town of Falerii Novi, in combination with an assessment of the unpublished pottery from the excavations of 1969-75: our objective is to further our knowledge and understanding of the Roman town and its earlier phases of settlement (Laun…
Interamna Lirenas and Its Territory (Comune Di Pignataro Interamna, Provincia Di Frosinone, Regione Lazio)
The fieldwork project at Interamna Lirenas has run for six consecutive years in 2015. Since its inception, our research has endeavoured to combine an integrated array of field methodologies including geophysical survey, fieldwalking and (since 2013) excavation (Bellini et al., 2012; 2013; 2014; Ballantyne et al., 2015). The range of data so collected not only has prompted a fundamental change in our understanding of the long-term development of t…
The Impact of Spatial Sampling and Migration on the Interpretation of Complex Archaeological Ground‐penetrating Radar Data
In this paper, the impact of spatial sample density and three‐dimensional migration processing on the interpretation of archaeological ground‐penetrating radar (GPR) data is assessed. First, the question of how to determine the sample interval required to take full advantage of the spatial resolution capabilities of GPR without oversampling is addressed. To this end, we transform a test profile into the frequency–wavenumber ( f–k ) domain and est…
GPR survey at the Roman town of Mariana (Corsica)
In the last ten years, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) has become one of the most valuable methods for the non-invasive investigation of complex urban sites (see e.g. Neubauer et al.,2002; Gaffney et al.,2004; Seren et al.,2004; Leckebusch & Sütterlin, 2007). This contribution summarizes the first results of a GPR survey, carried out in 2008 at the Roman colonia of Mariana, situated in the valley of the Golo, Northwestern Corsica (Fig. 1). Mariana…
Ground‐penetrating radar survey over bronze age circular monuments on a sandy soil, complemented with electromagnetic induction and fluxgate gradiometer data
This paper presents a ground‐penetrating radar (GPR) survey over two circular structures originally surrounding Bronze Age burial mounds at the site of Koekelare (western Belgium). The region is characterized by sandy soils. Their low water storage capacity and the consequent moisture contrasts in dry summers played an important role in the detection of over 1000 Bronze Age funeral monuments through aerial archaeology in the past few decades. At …
