In 1977 and 1978, test excavations in a proposed highway construction zone revealed a Soho phase irrigation canal just to the west of Pueblo Grande, Phoenix, Arizona. The stratigraphic and artifact content of the canal feature is discussed and interpretations of the canal's history are presented
Quantitative Variations In Flaked Stone Debitage
In an attempt to discern the quantitative parameters diagnostic of specific load applications (i.e.hard-and soft-hammer percussion and pressure flaking) used in flint knapping, approximately 1,500 experimentally produced flakes were analyzed. Load varieties were recorded during production, flakes were standardized as to plane size through graduated sieves, and weighed and measured for maximum thicknesses. Archaeological excavations directed by Laurens C. Hammack were conducted near Overgaard, Arizona, under the Statewide Highway Salvage Program.
