The Collapse of Complex Societies
The Collapse of Complex Societies
Why Did Ancient Civilizations Fail
Rome and the Classic Maya
This volume compares two of the most famous cases of civilizational collapse, that of the Roman Empire and the Classic Maya world. First examining the concept of collapse, and how it has been utilized in the historical, archaeological and anthropological study of past complex societies, Storey and Storey draw on extensive archaeological evidence to consider the ultimate failure of the institutions, infrastructure and material culture of both of t…
The Cambridge Companion to Ancient Rome
Rome was the largest city in the ancient world. As the capital of the Roman Empire, it was clearly an exceptional city in terms of size, diversity and complexity. While the Colosseum, imperial palaces and Pantheon are among its most famous features, this volume explores Rome primarily as a city in which many thousands of men and women were born, lived and died. The thirty-one chapters by leading historians, classicists and archaeologists discuss …
Urbanism in the Preindustrial World
Ground‐penetrating radar survey of the Sny Magill Mound Group, Effigy Mounds National Monument, Iowa
A ground‐penetrating radar (GPR) survey of 101 mounds at the Sny Magill Unit of Effigy Mounds National Monument, Iowa, demonstrates that GPR can be an effective tool to evaluate the structure and condition of mounds without damaging them. Ideal survey conditions and improved processing technology allow for the identification of strata within the mounds, as well as areas of post‐construction disturbance and possible archaeological features within …
Ostia
Regionaries-Type Insulae 2
The architectural/residential unit (ARU) concept previously defined and elaborated for Ostia is here considered in light of the Roman evidence. I conclude that the ARU is the best candidate to be the archaeological correlate of the term insula in the Regionaries. This conclusion is drawn in light of (1) the weight of evidence from review of the documentary sources that points to or is compatible with the concept of the ARU; (2) statistical analys…
Regionaries-Type Insulae 1
The question of the disposition and arrangement of Roman residential units has long been a feature of the archaeological study of the Roman ruins of the Vesuvian cities, and Ostia, the port of Rome. In this paper, the results of recent research at Ostia are reported regarding the division of internal space within the fabric of street blocks, in the hopes of throwing light on the vexed question of the proper referent for the term insula as it occu…

The population of ancient Rome
What was the population of imperial Rome? City blocks in Pompeii and Ostia are sufficiently well explored that a fair estimate of population density can now be arrived at. That peoples the city of ancient Rome with roughly 450,000 inhabitants, within the known population and density range of pre-industrial and modern urban centres
