    David Sunderland•BOOK•Managing British Colonial and…•2007

A survey of the Crown Agents during a turbulent and eventful period. Britain's Crown Agents' Office is a unique development agency. • Disgusting to the imagination and destructive of health’? The metropolitan supply of water, 1820–52

    Open Access•David Sunderland•ARTICLE•Urban History•2003•Citada por: 1

The criticisms of the early nineteenth-century metropolitan water supply by contemporary interest groups have been largely accepted by present day historians. This article argues that these criticisms were undeserved. It is argued that the London water companies provided an adequate amount of water; charged reasonable prices, given their large capital investments; and that, although the quality of water may have been poor compared to modern stand…

    Open Access•David Sunderland•ARTICLE•Urban History•1999•Citada por: 1

The paper investigates the activities of the eight London Commissions of Sewers during the period 1800–47. It is argued that the criticisms of the Commissions made by Edwin Chadwick and later historians are undeserved. The Commissions were efficient, innovative and honest, and successfully kept pace with the ever-changing sanitary needs of the capital. Although they operated under severe statutory constraints, they constructed many miles of sewer…

Two major debates in the literature, productivity performance and the decline of the cotton industry, are joined in the analysis presented in this article on the attempts to raise productivity through the introduction of the more looms per weaver system in cotton weaving in the inter-war years. We find that the limited resultant changes were the outcome of understandable predisposition to maintain co-operative behaviour which meant that productiv…
