John Maynard Keynes (1883–1946)
Keynes' bidrag til makroøkonomisk analysemetode
On Microfoundations and Keynes’ Economics
Most mainstream economists regard the principles of ‘rational choice’ theory as the only foundation of economics and insist that macroeconomics be based on those principles. These include certainty or certainty-equivalence, which followers of Keynes reject. Macrofoundations of microeconomics are often proposed instead. We argue that the issue is more complex and explain why it is unlikely that a logically watertight fit between the two levels of …
Samuelson's ghosts
Over a quarter of a century has passed since the 1987 publication of Paul A. Samuelson’s historiographical manifesto ‘Out of the closet: A program for the Whig history of economic science’, summarising arguments that had developed during a 16-year debate provoked by his 1971Journal of Economic Literature article on the Marxian transformation problem. Samuelson’s intervention marked a defining turning point in the evolution of contemporary economi…
Keynes, the Long Run, and the Present Crisis
Keynes was always alert to the fact that capitalism, though in his mind the most efficient form of economic organization, was flawed in many respects and often offered its participants no incentive to rearrange matters to bring about a better outcome. In this paper the authors briefly review some of his schemes to illustrate the general shape of his thinking on the flaws of capitalism and their correctives, and then expand on one of his concerns—…
On Causes and Outcomes of the European Crisis
We consider future possibilities for finance in Europe on the basis of an attempt to understand its present and its past. The purpose of this paper is thus to explore the relationship between the way in which the financial sector and the economy have been understood in Europe and the consequences both for institutional and policy design and for future possibilities. In particular, we focus on the evolving relationship between the state and the fi…
Could the Crisis at Northern Rock have been Predicted
Bankers have, from their beginning, made their money by taking risks and deciding how much risk they dare take, by expanding gradually, testing the water. Within this framework, the first risk is of illiquidity, but they must also ensure solvency. The steps taken by Northern Rock in developing their present ‘business plan’ are the same as those taken by most other banks, responding to the same incentives. It is the rapidity of its expansion that …
On Open Systems
To many, economics is seen as increasingly divorced from reality. I shall argue that one of the causes of this divorce is the attachment to closed-system theorising, and advocate instead the method of open systems with partial and temporary closures. Definitions of closed and open systems are examined. It is evident that there are many different criteria which may define open systems. Theorists differ in their emphasis on one or other criterion. …

Keynes’s monetary theory
The title of the paper alerts the reader to the fact that while the role of money in Keynes’s earlier work is alluded to, it is mostly the monetary contribution of the General Theory (to which the author is particularly partial) which is surveyed here. The General Theory represents a breakthrough in monetary theory both broadly and narrowly defined. Money in the General Theory is all-pervasive. It is essential in the sense of Radner and Hahn. Mon…
Hicks and Keynes on liquidity preference
In his last book Sir John Hicks addressed several fundamental questions of monetary theory, from which I have chosen one to discuss in this paper: how to model the influence of flows of savings on securities markets and the rate of interest. His answer is an attempt to integrate the liquidity preference and loanable funds theories of interest. I argue that the attempt is, and will remain, unsuccessful, as the loanable funds approach arises from a…
