Adopting an Evidence‐Based Management Approach in Teaching
This study examines how business and management academics in Central Europe conceptualise and enact Evidence‐Based Management (EBM) in their teaching, the constraints shaping its pedagogical translation and the support needed to strengthen evidence‐informed education. Thirty academics from three HEIs in Prague, Zagreb and Opole completed a supervised, semi‐structured questionnaire. The findings show that academics' understandings of EBM frequentl…
Scale validation of the “Key Competences in Sustainability” Indicator Tool (KCiS-IT) among business and economics students in seven European HEIs
Purpose This aim of this study is to develop and validate the 25-item “Key Competences in Sustainability” Indicator Tool (KCiS-IT), grounded in the concept of Integrated Problem-Solving Competence (IPSC) as proposed by Wiek et al. (2011, 2016). It evaluates the construct validity of its five competence measures and their applicability to a broader meta-competence, IPSC. The study also evaluates IPSC’s concurrent validity by testing hypothesised p…
Gender balance in national parliament
This quantitative study queried perceptions of the gender corrective mechanism as part of a broader parliamentary gender balance reform programme in Southern European, EU island state Malta. A representative sample (n = 435) of the Maltese electorate showed support for increased representation of women (88.5%) and the integration of the gender corrective mechanism (66.5%); but manifested a preference for other measures, namely childcare facilitie…
Europe 2020 and the European Research Area
Both Europe 2020 and the European Research Area initiatives seek to better prepare the European Union (EU) to compete in the future. Towards this end, both programs encourage more scientific publications and international collaboration by the European member-states. The purpose of this research paper is to analyze the smallest EU member-states and their respective universities (Cyprus, Luxembourg, and Malta), and how they have responded to these …
The spiral of conflict
Naive realism research has demonstrated the fact that individuals deprecate alternative \nperspectives to preserve their own. With reference to an outgroup, this bias may be \ncompounded by ethnocentrism. We present an operationalized measure of naive realism \nin terms of attributions of knowledge and ignorance. We hypothesized that \nrespondents would make higher attributions of knowledge to those who agree with \nthem than those who disagree w…
Understanding Female Inactivity in Malta
This empirical study is based in Malta, a small island state with the highest rate of economically inactive women in the European Union (EU). Using a random sample of 402 inactive female homemakers, the responses to a telephone survey revealed that (a) this inactive group is motivated by aspects of social and economic well-being and to a lesser extent by aspects of personal and professional development; (b) work hindrances include low wages, fami…
Understanding and Assessing the Work Motivations of Employed Women
This empirical study investigates the work motivations of employed women in the Maltese labor market. A self-administered questionnaire purposely designed for the present study was presented to a quota sample of 400 women employed in Malta. Statistical analyses revealed that (a) the most important work motivators are "financial independence" and "earning money for basic necessities"; (b) the 16 proposed work motivations could be grouped under two…
Investigating gender differences in mathematics performance and in self‐regulated learning

Design/methodology/approach A representative sample of 400 Grade 11 students (aged 14‐15) attending Maltese mixed‐ability schools undertook a mathematics test and responded to a questionnaire. The resulting performance and SRL measures were used to answer four questions empirically. Findings Girls perfor…
