  • Health Insurance and Income Inequality

    Open Access•Robert Kaestner, Darren Lubotsky•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic…•2016•Referências: 24

Health insurance and other in-kind forms of compensation and government benefits are typically not included in measures of income and analyses of inequality. This omission is important. Given the large and growing cost of health care in the United States and the presence of large government health insurance programs such as Medicaid and Medicare, it is crucial to understand how health insurance and related public policies contribute to measured e…

  • The Effect of Changes in the U.S. Wage Structure on Recent Immigrants' Earnings

Darren Lubotsky•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2011

Since recent immigrants tend to earn less than natives, their relative labor market status has been adversely impacted by an increase in the return to labor market skills and widening wage inequality over the past two decades. To evaluate the magnitude of this effect, this study uses Social Security earnings records matched to recent cross sections of the SIPP and CPS to estimate the change in the return to skills among native born workers. This …

  • Kindergarten Entrance Age and Children's Achievement

Todd E Elder, Darren Lubotsky et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Human Resources•2009

We present evidence that the positive relationship between kindergarten entrance age and school achievement primarily reflects skill accumulation prior to kindergarten, rather than a heightened ability to learn in school among older children. The association between achievement test scores and entrance age appears during the first months of kindergarten, declines sharply in subsequent years, and is especially pronounced among children from upper-…

  • Mexican Immigration And Self-Selection

Pablo Ibarrarán, Darren Lubotsky•CHAPTER•Mexican Immigration to the United…•2007

This chapter uses data from the 2000 Mexican and U.S. Censuses to examine how the educational attainment of Mexican migrants to the United States compares to the educational attainment of those who remain in Mexico. The main finding is that low-skilled Mexicans are more likely than higher-skilled Mexicans to migrate to the United States. Mexican immigrants in the 2000 U.S. Census are older and significantly better-skilled than migrants in the 200…

  • Chutes or Ladders? A Longitudinal Analysis of Immigrant Earnings

    Darren Lubotsky•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2007•Citada por: 53•Referências: 3

I use longitudinal earnings data from Social Security records to study the effect of selective emigration on the measured progress of im-migrants to the United States. The immigrant-native earnings gap closes by 10–15 percent during immigrants ’ first 20 years in the United States, or about half as fast as typical estimates from repeated cross sections of the decennial census. The divergent results indicate that emigration by low-wage immigrants …

  • Interpretation of Regressions with Multiple Proxies

Darren Lubotsky, Martin Wittenberg•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2006

Multiple proxy variables are typically available for an unobserved explanatory variable in a regression. We provide a procedure by which the coefficient of interest can be estimated from a regression in which all the proxies are included simultaneously. This estimator is superior in large samples to the common practice of creating a summary measure of the proxy variables. We examine the relationship between parents' income and children's reading …

  • The Labor Market Effects of Welfare Reform

    Open Access•Darren Lubotsky•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2004•Citada por: 1•Referências: 10

A major goal of the 1996 federal welfare reform was to increase the labor market participation of welfare recipients. Some analysts have speculated that if the reform is successful, this increase in labor supply may exert downward pressure on wages and reduce the employment rate of other low-skilled workers in the labor market. The magnitude of these hypothetical labor market effects is uncertain because there have not been large changes in eligi…

  • Economic Status and Health in Childhood

Anne Case, Darren Lubotsky et al.•ARTICLE•American Economic Review•2002

The well-known positive association between health and income in adulthood has antecedents in childhood. Not only is children's health positively related to household income, but the relationship between household income and children's health becomes more pronounced as children age. Part of the relationship can be explained by the arrival and impact of chronic conditions. Children from lower-income households with chronic conditions have worse he…
