Open Access•Laneita Williamson, Laneita Freeman Williamson et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Introduction: Existing data on how history of trauma and adversity affects healthcare professionals is limited. This study sought to describe the prevalence of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs) and their association with present-day workplace and wellbeing outcomes among a sample of healthcare teammates overall, as well as specifically among nurses. • Associations of fruit intake with adiposity and cardiometabolic biomarkers in UK Biobank

Open Access•Eirini Trichia, Fiona Maclean et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

We observed very small differences in adiposity and cardiometabolic biomarkers between those who reported high fruit consumption vs low, most of which did not persist over follow-up. Future studies on other mechanisms and detailed assessment of confounding might further elucidate the relevance of fruit to cardiovascular disease

  • Body-mass index, blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular mortality in Cuba

Open Access•Nurys B Armas Rojas, Ben Lacey et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

This large prospective study provides direct evidence for the effects of these major risk factors on cardiovascular mortality in Cuba. Despite comparatively low levels of these risk factors by international standards, the strength of their association with cardiovascular death means they nevertheless exert a substantial impact on premature mortality in Cuba

  • Child Acute Malnutrition and Mortality in Populations Affected by Displacement in the Horn of Africa, 1997–2009

    Open Access•John B Mason, Jessica M White et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2012

Drought and conflict in the Horn of Africa are causing population displacement, increasing risks of child mortality and malnutrition. Humanitarian agencies are trying to mitigate the impact, with limited resources. Data from previous years may help guide decisions. Trends in different populations affected by displacement (1997-2009) were analyzed to investigate: (1) how elevated malnutrition and mortality were among displaced compared to host pop…

  • Cardiovascular and neuroendocrine responses to extended laboratory challenge

    Barbara S McCann, J Carter et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1993

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a 2-hour laboratory challenge on heart rate, blood pressure, catecholamines, and cortisol; and investigate the contribution of the physical act of speaking on both neuroendocrine and cardiovascular measures. Using a within-subjects design, 14 subjects were tested individually during two separate laboratory sessions. During one session, subjects engaged in two cognitively demanding tasks for …
