These attributes make the book an invaluable contribution to seeing, analyzing, and communicating about movement i…

  • Approaches to Dance (3)

    Open Access•Judy Van Zile•ARTICLE•Dance Research•2021

Part autobiography, memoir, and autoethnography, this essay sketches a pathway that zig-zags and follows switchbacks as it moves from childhood ballet lessons to a profession in academic teaching and research. The path embraces dance notation, Korean dance, movement analysis, history, iconography, aesthetics, language, and communication as it continues beyond university employment into retirement, revealing the evolution of thought processes and …

structuralism and post (post)modern discourse that no longer includes geniuses? Is it appropriate to provide such a subjective, romantic narrative of Laban's life, who lived through the Third Reich? His attitude toward National Socialism was indecisive, to put it mildly, and that is still the subject of controversy in Germany, as can be seen in the book Tanz unterm Hakenkreuz (Dancing Under the Swastika) by Marion Kant and Lilian Karina. His comp…

  • Examining Movement in the Context of the Music Event

Judy Van Zile•ARTICLE•Yearbook for Traditional Music•1988

Movement is necessary to produce sound and in many cases is an integral component of both the resultant sound and its sociocultural context. At times movement is such an integral part of the music event and so highly prescribed that the musician might even be considered a dancer. Some ethnomusicological studies include comments relating to movement and some in a rather extensive manner.2 I urge, however, that this component be routinely examined …

    Open Access•Judy Van Zile•ARTICLE•Dance Research Journal•1985•Citada por: 2•Referências: 6

In the Western music world a score written by a composer is distributed to members of an orchestra who individually learn their parts, come together to rehearse under the guidance or a conductor, and then perform before the public. In the drama world a script written by a playwright is distributed to actors who individually learn their parts, come together to rehearse under the guidance of a director, and then perform before the public. • Issues in Labananalysis Research

    Open Access•Judy Van Zile•ARTICLE•Dance Research Journal•1981

As part of on-going research in ethnology and notation I have been documenting Japanese bon dancing in Hawaii. Notating the dances has proved to be a challenge, not so much because of the difficulty of movement patterns, but because of the problem of deciding what to notate. Perhaps because of the emphasis on the event itself and the stress on community participation, uniformity in movement style (of the type found in professional theatrical trad…
