Regional and rural-urban patterns in the prevalence of diagnosed hypertension among older U.S. adults with diabetes, 2005–2017
Although the magnitudes of these associations are small, differences in hypertension prevalence across rural-urban areas and geographic regions may have implications for targeted interventions to improve chronic disease prevention and management
Development and validation of mortality prediction models based on the social determinants of health
BACKGROUND: There is no standardised approach to screening adults for social risk factors. The goal of this study was to develop mortality risk prediction models based on the social determinants of health (SDoH) for clinical risk stratification. METHODS: Data were used from REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study, a national, population-based, longitudinal cohort of black and white Americans aged ≥45 recruited betw…

Partnership status and retention in care among cisgender heterosexual newly diagnosed people with HIV
This study examined the role of partnership status (married, unmarried-partnered, and unpartnered) on retention in care among newly diagnosed (2013-2017), cisgender heterosexual people with HIV in Birmingham, Alabama (n = 152). This study evaluated all scheduled HIV primary care provider visits for two years following diagnosis date. A kept-visit measure was calculated such that, if an individual attended ≥1 visit in each of the four 6-month inte…
Role of Visit Modality in the HIV-Related No-Shows During the Covid-19 Pandemic
The association between neighborhood social and economic environment and prevalent diabetes in urban and rural communities
Participants living in the most disadvantaged neighborhoods had a higher diabetes prevalence in each urban/rural community type and these associations were only partly explained by individual-level sociodemographic factors. In addition to addressing individual-level factors, identifying neighborhood characteristics and how they operate across urban and rural settings may be helpful for informing interventions that target chronic health conditions
Assessing the Impact of Covid-19 on Retention in HIV Primary Care
Covid Community-Engaged Testing in Alabama
Rural communities are often underserved by public health testing initiatives in Alabama. As part of the National Institutes of Health’s Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics‒Underserved Populations initiative, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, along with community partners, sought to address this inequity in COVID-19 testing. We describe the participatory assessment, selection, and implementation phases of this project, which administered more…
Health care experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic by race and social determinants of health among adults age ≥ 58 years in the REGARDS study
In this national study of older US adults, many participants with potential COVID-19 symptoms and asymptomatic participants who desired testing did not receive COVID-19 testing
Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Schedule
Objectives. To determine rates of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine adherence to the 2011 and 2016 Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations in the United States. Methods. We conducted a retrospective cohort study by using the 2011 to 2017 Marketscan data for beneficiaries aged 9 to 26 years who had at least 1 claim for HPV vaccination between January 1, 2011, and January 1, 2017. According to the 2011 ACIP recommendat…
Body image and dissatisfaction among rural Deep South African American women in a weight loss intervention
Body image perception may impact health-promoting behaviors as well as knowledge regarding health risks associated with obesity. Our cross-sectional analysis evaluated body image and its association with body mass index among overweight and obese treatment-seeking African American women ( N = 409). Differences between current and desired body image were captured using the Pulvers scale. Results indicated the presence of body image dissatisfaction…

Use of Medicare Claims Data for the Identification of Myocardial Infarction
OBJECTIVES: Assess the validity of Medicare claims for identifying myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS: We used data from 9951 Medicare beneficiaries 65 years and above in the Reasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke study. Between 2003 and 2012, 669 participants had an MI identified and adjudicated through study procedures (ie, the gold standard), and 552 had an overnight inpatient claim with a code for MI (ICD-9 code 410.x0 or 41…
Farm-to-Consumer Retail Outlet Use, Fruit and Vegetable Intake, and Obesity Status among WIC Program Participants in Alabama
FTC retail outlet use was associated with F&V intake among program participants but not obesity status
Correlates of self-reported dietary cruciferous vegetable intake and urinary isothiocyanate from two cohorts in China
Objective To assess correlations between cruciferous vegetable intake and urinary isothiocyanate (ITC) level, in addition to glutathione S -transferase ( GST ) genotypes and other individual factors. Design The study included cohort participants whose urinary ITC levels had been previously ascertained. Urinary ITC was assessed using HPLC. Usual dietary intake of cruciferous vegetables was assessed using a validated FFQ and total dietary ITC intak…
Association Between Neighborhood Disadvantage and Hypertension Prevalence, Awareness, Treatment, and Control in Older Adults
Objectives. We evaluated the effect of neighborhood disadvantage (ND) on older adults’ prevalence, awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension. Methods. Data were from the University of Alabama at Birmingham Study of Aging, an observational study of 1000 community-dwelling Black and White Alabamians aged 65 years and older, in 1999 to 2001. We assessed hypertension prevalence, awareness, treatment, and control with blood pressure measuremen…
