A method for aging the female Os pubis
Descriptions of the morphological components of the female os pubis , their developmental stages and age relations are presented in terms of formula scores following the method of McKern and Stewart ('57). It is noted that morphological development of females is different from that of males, and that females are subject to trauma of childbirth which may cause an individual female os pubis to appear older than it actually is. As compared to the ma…

Several cranial indices and their relevance to fossil man
An evaluation of three cranial indices proposed by Le Gros Clark ('50) is presented in light of hominid fossil material not previously considered. The data analysis suggests that the supra‐orbital height index is an important contribution to cranial analysis and elaborations of it may prove valuable. From the results, the authors suggest that the two australopithecine types be separated on the genus level, i.e., Australopithecus africanus and Par…
A method for assessment of maximum long bone length and living stature from fragmentary long bones
The proper analysis of prehistoric skeletal populations includes estimated individual statures and this estimation usually depends on the presence of one or more complete long bones, a condition that is too often rare. Although a number of techniques have been devised to utilize fragmentary long bones for stature estimations, the results have not produced the desired accuracy. The present paper attempts to refine and expand Müller's method by app…
The correlation of bone robusticity with the perforation of the coronoid‐olecranon septum in the humerus of man
Hrdlička ('32) theorized that the tendency towards perforation of the coronoid‐olecranon septum of the humerus was phylogenetic in origin, but its appearance also seemed to be negatively correlated with bone size. By determining the correlation between the occurrence of the perforation and certain standard anthropometric measurements, the present study provides a statistical tool to test Hrdlička's hypothesis more rigorously. The minimum middle d…

A Statistical Technique for Classifying Human Skeletal Remains
Arecurring question posed to the physical anthropologist by his archaeological associates concerns the problem of properly classifying new skeletal finds within the framework of a known local prehistory. An analysis may result which is initially purely quantitative. However, problems demanding interpretation often develop. For example, when the physical characteristics of prehistoric populations have been metrically described, their industrial ac…
