Protests and Radicalization in the Digital Age
This Element provides the first large-scale inquiry into the 'Reopen' protest movement against COVID-19 public health shutdowns. We synthesize digital ethnography inside the movement with text analyses of an original data set spanning more than 1.8 million Facebook comments and posts from over 224,000 online activists. This article examines the process of nation-building, drawing lessons from the remarkable experience of Indonesia over the past century. This paper shows how white migration out of the postbellum South diffused and entrenched Confederate culture across the United States at a critical juncture of westward expansion and postwar reconciliation.These migrants laid the groundwork for Confederate symbols and racial norms to become pervasive nationally in the early 20th century.Occupying positions of authority, former slaveholders played an outsized role in this process.Beyond memorializ…
The Promise and Pitfalls of Conflict Prediction
How feasible is violence early-warning prediction? Colombia and Indonesia have unusually fine-grained data. We assemble two decades of local violent events alongside hundreds of annual risk factors. We attempt to predict violence one year ahead with a range of machine learning techniques. Our models reliably identify persistent, high-violence hot spots. Frontier Culture
The presence of a westward‐moving frontier of settlement shaped early U.S. history. In 1893, the historian Frederick Jackson Turner famously argued that the American frontier fostered individualism. We investigate the “frontier thesis” and identify its long‐run implications for culture and politics. Economic Shocks and Conflict
Higher national incomes are correlated with political stability. Is this relationship causal? We test three theories linking income to conflict with new data on export price shocks. Price shocks have no effect on new conflict, even large shocks in high-risk nations. Rising prices, however, weakly lead to shorter, less deadly wars. This evidence contradicts the theory that rising state revenues incentivize state capture, but supports the idea that…

Concern has intensified in recent years that many instrumental variables used in widely-cited growth regressions may be invalid, weak, or both.
