This chapter examines gender as a category and concept and its deployment in the study of systems of belief and practice in the last decades of the twentieth century. It charts four theoretical developments that have extended the study of gender in significant ways: that is, intersectionality (analysis of interrelations between race, class, and gender), feminist poststructuralism, gender studies and performance (performance as a central aspect of…
Political Bodies/Body Politic
'Political Bodies/Body Politic' draws on feminism, gender studies, and queer theory to examine how myth, symbol and ritual express belief systems. The book explores the operation of gender in a variety of social and historical contexts, ranging from feminist speculative fiction and systems of belief to popular culture and ancient historical texts. Enfleshing semiotics
This essay engages the work of Robert Yelle in his text Semiotics of Religion: Signs of the Sacred in History. The author examines in particular his theorizing of the indexical sign function and its capacity to ‘enflesh’ the symbol. In the Peircean and Saussurean frames the symbol is an abstraction, a concept, and removed from the experiential. Pain, Gender, and Systems of Belief and Practice
In the Eurowest pain is discursively framed as something that eludes discourse and therefore is outside language. In this framing, pain, as outside language, is given a social and a historical status understood to be beyond human construction. This article is the first step in a larger project toward destablizing such a conceptualization of pain and begins by engaging feminist theorizing of body and pain. Interdisciplinarity in Religious and Women's Studies
This paper examines how interdisciplinarity has been adopted by, and deployed in, the production of knowledge in the university as institution. I begin by outlining three subcategories of interdisciplinarity that determine its semantic boundaries, and then shift to examine interdisciplinary work in Women's and Religious Studies. Thereafter I speak to the impact interdisciplinarity has had on knowledge and knowledge production in the university
Cane Toads, Taxonomies, Boundaries, and the Comparative Study of Religion
Cane toads are heavily built amphibians that grow up to 15 centimeters (six inches) long. They have warty skin, though females tend to be larger and smoother skinned. They were introduced to Australia 66 years ago [1935] at Gordonvale, North Queensland, by the Australian Bureau of Sugar Experimental Stations, despite warnings from some scientists and naturalists.
