  • What to Submit to the JBA? That Is the Question

Open Access•Kasper Tang Vangkilde, Breslin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business Anthropology•2026

It is no surprise that editing an academic journal is hard work.Editors are, if not famous, then at least notorious for remarking on the rigors of publishing article after article, issue after issue. When one manuscript is <inally ready, another is usually already waiting in the wings, to be read, screened, reviewed, revised, edited, laid out, proofread, and uploaded. But the truth -the real truth, if you will -is that it is, above all, a privilege…

Open Access•Kasper Tang Vangkilde, Breslin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business Anthropology•2024

Writing this brief editorial from the city of Copenhagen in Denmark, the summer is :inally upon us.The sun is shining, and the temperatures have risen to almost 30 degrees Celsius. As always in Copenhagen, bikes are out, :illing the streets of what is often celebrated as one of the most bikefriendly cities in the world. What is not so usual, however, is that many of the cyclists are wearing the red national team shirt of the Danish football team, b…

  • A game of futures

Andreas Brandt, Andreas Lyse Brandt et al.•ARTICLE•Culture and Organization•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 28

While the future has gained increasing attention in organizational research, the minutiae and intricacies of how organizational actors produce and enact the future remain little explored. In this article, we present an ethnographic study of a future-making practice called ‘the strategy of scenarios’ in a Danish medical company. We propose the concept of technologies of prefiguration to capture how such practices prefigure the future so as to make…

  • In Search of Newness

Open Access•Kasper Tang Vangkilde, Breslin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business Anthropology•2023

In the past decades, it has been hard to ignore that a key characteristic of business is an unmistakable preoccupation, perhaps even obsession, with newness. In all corners of business, newness -along with its many allied notions such as creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship, all of which are centered around newness in one way or another -is considered to be absolutely critical for survival."Create/Innovate or die. This is the takenfor-grant…

  • Back to Copenhagen

Open Access•Kasper Tang Vangkilde, Breslin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business Anthropology•2022

Ever since Marcel Mauss wrote about the gift and Bronislaw Malinowski about the Kula, it has been something of an anthropological truism that things have social lives. As many readers of this journal will know, Arjun Appadurai (1986) made this particularly clear with his seminal anthology The Social Life of Things: Commodities in Cultural Perspective. While we will not rehearse the argument of the book here nor elaborate on its significance for t…

  • A Funky-Formal Fashion Collection

    Open Access•Kasper Tang Vangkilde•ARTICLE•Journal of Business Anthropology•2021

In this case study, we follow a group of five young talented fashion designers in HUGO BOSS charged with creating a new concept for the brand BOSS Orange. The concept is to be neither formal nor funky but, precisely, funky-formal. Based on ethnographic fieldwork among these designers, the case describes in detail how the initial idea of a funky-formal fashion collection gradually grows into a more concrete creative concept for such a collection. …

  • The Hygienic Problem of Social Innovation Work

Open Access•Nanna Søvsø Mikkelsen, Kasper Tang Vangkilde•ARTICLE•Anthropology of Work Review•2021•Referências: 16

In recent years, social innovation has received attention as a promising solution to societal challenges, not least because of its claims to create a symbiosis between social purposes and economic benefits. The often uneasy relation between social values and economic values is, however, not easily resolved in practice. Based on ethnographic research in the field of social innovation in Denmark, we argue that the relation between "the social" and …

  • Para-Ethnography 2.0

Kasper Tang Vangkilde, Morten Hulvej Rod•CHAPTER•Design Anthropological Futures•2020

Drawing upon Douglas R. Holmes and George E. Marcus’s concept of para-ethnography, which they developed to capture the reflexive practices or ‘pre-existing ethnographic consciousness or curiosity’ of new subjects in contemporary field sites. This chapter discusses a collaborative experiment which we conducted with a Danish consultancy firm and a Danish engineering company. Focusing on management as a social practice rather than an individual skil…

  • Innovationens Politik

Mia Krogager Mathiasen, Kasper Tang Vangkilde•ARTICLE•Tidsskriftet Antropologi•2018

  • Foretelling the future

    Open Access•Kasper Tang Vangkilde•ARTICLE•Anthropology Today•2017•Referências: 14

Based on ethnographic fieldwork in a fashion company, this article explores how fashion designers face the uncertain but critical challenge of foretelling the future. It is argued that fashion designers seek to become possessed by thezeitgeist, which attests to an animistic mode of being and a shamanic practice by means of which they turn into prophetic agents with a particular vision of the future. This makes them able to act on the future, and …

  • Creativity versus branding

    Kasper Tang Vangkilde•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Economy•2017•Referências: 25

In the contemporary organization of the economy, creativity and branding constitute two distinctive imperatives which generally point in different directions: the former towards newness and change, the latter towards continuity and recognisability. Numerous agents in corporate organizations thus face a conundrum of creativity versus branding, which is perhaps nowhere more pronounced than in the fashion business. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork …

  • Possessed by the Zeitgeist

    Open Access•Kasper Tang Vangkilde•ARTICLE•Journal of Business Anthropology•2015•Citada por: 1

The ability to foretell the future-and, as such, to conquer and determine it-is an essential preoccupation of contemporary business, which supposedly distinguishes the winners from the losers. The business of fashion is perhaps the case in point, being inherently concerned with continually staking out new paths into the future. In this article, I explore how fashion designers deal with this imperative through processes of seeking inspiration, con…
