Promoting peer support and engagement in child welfare using communities of practice and virtual communities of practice
Peer support and engagement play critical roles in reducing adverse outcomes in the child welfare workforce, such as burnout and secondary trauma. Reducing such outcomes may have broader impacts on the child welfare workforce. As part of the federal Permanency Innovations Initiative, this local grantee implemented an evidence-based intervention to improve outcomes for children with serious emotional disturbance. The project approach integrates the tenets of implementation science and program evaluation. This article considers the quality of the evidence that marriage confers unique benefits, and that, as such, social policies should be enacted to encourage couples, particularly those with few economic resources, to get married and stay together. Public concern about the future of marriage in the United States, we show, is rooted in demographic changes that reflect not so much a turning away from marriage, but an increasing openness to postponing…
