Transgender Youth
This study used three focus groups to explore factors that affect the experiences of youth (ages 15 to 21) who identify as transgender. The focus groups were designed to probe transgender youths' experiences of vulnerability in the areas of health and mental health. Teaching Lesbian/Gay Development
Few opportunities exist for young lesbians and gay men to learn about their lives. A university course on lesbian and gay development is described and its impact on students' lives is presented. The course focuses on the exceptional talent of lesbians and gay men in creating lives in a stigmatizing culture. The Effects of Leaderless Encounter Group Experiences on Helping Skills Training
The effects of an audiotaped leaderless encounter group on training in basic helping skills were examined. Trainees undergoing the Danish and Hauer (1973) training program were assigned to a weekly encounter group or to a didactic lecture-discussion group. No changes in trainees' self-actualization, trait or state anxiety, or rated verbal helping behavior were found due to participation in the encounter group. Significant positive changes in verb…
A Follow-Up Evaluation of Helping Skills Training
The retention of verbal helping skills by human service worker trainees who had completed the Danish and Hauer (1973) training program seven months earlier was explored. Twenty-six trainees engaged in three helping interviews'before training, immediately following training, and seven months later. An Empirical Investigation of the Construct Validity of Empathic Understanding Ratings
This study examined the effect of different amounts of client-therapist interaction data on empathy ratings. Audiotaped therapist-client interactions including client statement, therapist response, and subsequent client response were rated for therapist empathy by high-functioning, experienced raters. Raters made significantly different judgments about levels of therapist empathy depending on the amount of therapist-client interaction data availa…
