Health and Disease Among Medieval Urban Animals
During the lifespan of domestic animals, specific pathologies may arise in relation to their intended use. With the aim of increasing knowledge about the uses of animals in past urban contexts, a number of archeozoological studies conducted on faunal samples from medieval and post-medieval sites in Barcelona (north-eastern Iberia) have been reviewed and the pathological cases analyzed. The results show that the most frequent pathologies among lar…
Nostra Senyora dels Àngels d’Avinganya (Seròs, NE Iberia). Zooarchaeology studies in a rural monastery (16th-19th centuries)
The monastery of Avinganya (Seròs, Lleida, north-eastern Iberia) was founded at the beginning of the 13th century (1201) and was occupied by the Trinitarian Order. Initially it operated as a male community although it subsequently became a nunnery (1251), reverting to being a friary (1529) until its final demise and abandonment in 1835. In addition, in its early stages, it was a burial space for some important figures of the Catalan-Aragonese nob…
An Ultradolichocephaly in a Knight of the Order of Calatrava from the Castle of Zorita de los Canes (Guadalajara, Spain) Dated Between the 13th and 15th Centuries
This study presents a paleopathological analysis of individual T4.2 from the archaeological site of the castle of Zorita de los Canes (Guadalajara, Spain). The individual exhibits ultradolichocephaly and was dated between the 13th and 15th centuries. Based on the context, the individual could have been a member of the military–religious Order of Calatrava. Standard bioanthropological and paleopathological methods were applied. The results indicat…
Pyre wood fuel and food remains in a necropolis of Barcino (Barcelona, NE Iberian Peninsula)
Wood fuel consumption in the city of Barcelona in the medieval and early modern periods. An overview based on archaeological wood charcoal analysis
Wood fuel was essential for urban development in the Mediterranean area during the Middle Ages. Therefore, wood gathering practices and supply can be investigated through the study of wood-charcoal fragments obtained from urban archaeological contexts. This paper considers anthracological remains from 14 archaeological rescue-interventions in Barcelona (NE Iberia), to reconstruct the city’s wood-fuel usage from the 6th to the 17th century ce . Th…
From sacred symbolism to luxury display and consumption
This work presents the first remains of a peacock (Pavo cristatus Linnaeus 1758) discovered in an archeological context in Catalonia. It is a well-preserved animal (14 remains of an adult female) located in medieval levels-datable to the 13th century (1210-1278 cal. AD) at the site of Carrer de Sotstinent Navarro, in the city of Barcelona. We present the study of the remains of this animal together with that of the other birds recovered from the …
Reconstruction of the palaeoenvironment and anthropogenic activity from the Upper Pleistocene/Holocene anthracological records of the NE Iberian Peninsula (Barcelona, Spain)
Palaeoenvironmental record of the Cal Maurici wetland sediment archive in Barcelona (NE Iberian Peninsula) between c. 6000 and 4000 cal. yr BP
This study presents the results of a multi-proxy analysis conducted to improve our understanding of the palaeoenvironmental conditions of the freshwater and brackish marshes of Cal Maurici (Barcelona, Spain) and the human impact on them during the mid-Holocene (6171–3891 cal. yr BP). The study integrates data from pollen, phytolith, diatom, charcoal, seeds and malacological analyses and helps to reconstruct the ecological conditions during the ea…

Palaeoecology of Neanderthals during Dansgaard–Oeschger cycles in northeastern Iberia (Abric Romaní)
Holocene vegetational landscapes of NE Iberia
This paper presents the anthracological results of Cova de la Guineu. This cave, which is located at the NE of the Iberian Peninsula, has provided charcoal samples from the early Neolithic to the Iberian period enabling the identification of different phases on the basis of flora assemblage interpretation. The results show how Mediterranean forests have been present since the early Holocene stages. At the early phases of the sequence the assembla…
