Lemmings are a key component of tundra food webs and changes in their dynamics can affect the whole ecosystem. We present a comprehensive overview of lemming monitoring and research activities, and assess recent trends in lemming abundance across the circumpolar Arctic. Evaluation of a Technique to Trap Lemmings Under the Snow
We attempted to live trap lemmings under the snow in their preferred winter habitat at two sites in the Canadian Arctic using chimney-like boxes. Lemmings used the boxes during winter, but we had very low trapping success in April and May. During spring trapping, in contrast to most of the winter, subnivean temperatures became colder than ambient air temperatures. The Use of Indirection in Televised Political Debates
We examine the use of indirection in the three televised debates between George Bush and Al Gore during the 2000 American presidential race. Indirection is a discursive process that enables a speaker to perform a nonliteral “primary” speech act by performing a literal “secondary” speech act. Molt Migration in Relation to Breeding Success in Greater Snow Geese
We describe summer migratory movements by female greater snow geese (Chen caerulescens atlantica) breeding on Bylot Island, Nunavut. We followed 121 radio-collared females between 1997 and 2001 to determine the frequency and timing of their departure from the colony in relation to breeding status, nesting success, and molting chronology. We found that 90% (n = 51) of non-breeders (no nest found) and 97% (n = 29) of failed nesters (nest destroyed …
