Τὰ Ἅγια Εἰς Λόγον Εὐλογιῶν
The 14th canon of Laodicea, forbidding the exchange of τὰ ἅγια εἰς λόγον εὐλογιῶν, has never received a satisfactory explanation. This article suggests that it may be legislating against a local paschal custom which has become suspect due to its practice by Montanist communities
Office, and Appointment to Office, in Early Christian Circles
In an earlier essay on the interplay between charisma and office, I listed the questions I had left unanswered: the origin of bishops, deacons, and presbyters, the precise extent and scope of their duties (as part of which we should pose the, as much unasked as unanswered, question of how bishops and/or presbyters come to have the exclusive right of presidency at the Eucharist), the fate of the teacher in the second century, and the manner in whi…
The Greek Life of Herakleides as a Liturgical Source
A vita of Herekleides, deriving from Cyprus and datable between the fifth and the seventh centuries, describes various liturgical events. These descriptions seem to presuppose a stage of liturgical development comparable to that known at Antioch in the middle of the fourth century. This vita is thus a valuable, albeit neglected, source for the history of the Antiochene liturgy. Abstract Une vita chypriote d’Héraklide, datée entre le ve et le viie…

Ordination Rites and Patronage Systems in Third-Century Africa
The principal purpose of this paper is to describe the ordination rites of third century Africa. Beside describing these rites, we shall seek to understand their historical growth through observing the manner in which their social context both represents a wider social reality and constructs a new social world within the church. This social world may be described as "contra-cultural", in that it depends on the norms of the wider society for its e…
The Original Condemnation of Asian Montanism
The object of this article is to describe the social and theological setting of primitive Montanism within second-century Asia in order to account for its appearance and its subsequent condemnation. According to an anonymous source employed by Eusebius the prophecy appeared in the middle of the second century under the leadership of a recent convert called Montanus, and the faithful of Asia gathered and condemned the movement at its outset. Clear…
Preacher and Audience
This volume brings together thirteen studies on Greek-speaking preachers and audiences in a period from the beginning of the second century A.D. to the beginning of the tenth century which has largely been neglected in the modern literature. The chapters represent a collection of case studies of individual preachers or periods of homiletic activity and cover themes including the identity of Greek-speaking preachers, the circumstances of delivery,…
The Asian Context of the New Prophecy and of Epistula Apostolorum
