Instead, it argues that these policies are rooted in chaos theory, which posits that within apparent disorder lies an underlying order. By applying this theoretical framework, the arti…

An Analysis of Social Proximity and Interest Rate in Rural South India
In this article we present the role of social proximity in the formation of the interest rate in the informal credit market in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. This paper is unique in the sense that it deals with social proximity and the formation of interest rate. If a lot of articles deal with the interest rate and social capital, none of them have attempted to link the two variables. A qualitative and quantitative survey was conducted on debt b…
Cooperative, Human Capital and Poverty
In this article we investigate a simple theoretical model of cooperative organisations which are capable of enhancing its members' human capital through efficient management of all their abilities. Thus, increased human capital has impact on the household's wealth and consumption. Cooperatives can help alleviate poverty in developing countries. However, the model shows that cooperatives cannot increase the number of their members infinitely. They…
Recruitment Patterns of Child Trafficking in Madagascar
Previous studies on child trafficking have focused on transborder phenomena due to the magnitude of the levels of exploitation observed in this context. Unfortunately, such a focus has greatly neglected child trafficking and its traits within the borders of a particular country. The goal of this article is to take stock of the situation in Madagascar. Our research is the first to empirically explore the issue in relation to Madagascar. It present…

The brokerage system in the brick kiln industry in Tamil Nadu, India
We have led a survey in brick kilns in the state of Tamil Nadu, India, to study the phenomenon of intermediation in the process of recruiting seasonal migrants who are employed for implementing the production. Henceforth, we show that intermediaries play a central role in this industry by simultaneously coordinating the actions of the supply and demand of labor and credit in the interlinked credit-labor market. The role of brokers in this industr…

Child Labour and Debt Bondage
The article highlights some of our findings from a study carried out in the brick kiln industry in Tamil Nadu, India. We have led both a qualitative and a quantitative survey. As child labour is a common factor in the brick kiln industry, we show that in the interlinked credit-labour market employers do not directly employ children, but they have implemented a system that constrains parents to use their children to improve their productivity. In …
