  • Surface and Deep Structure

    Andrew B Liu•ARTICLE•Critical Historical Studies•2026

This article argues that historians of neoliberalism could benefit from Moishe Postone’s call to move beyond the “surface” of market dynamics and engage the “deep structure” of capitalist value. Postone’s approach offers several suggestions for historians of neoliberalism: (1) to resituate the neoliberal era as one of many different “historical forms” of capital; (2) to write a history of the 1970s crisis through the categories “value” and the “c…

In light of the emergent "history of capitalism" field in Euro-American history, this article reviews and critically situates how the category "capitalism" has been debated within the historiographies of China and South Asia. In discussions paralleling European historiography, Sinologists and Indologists explored whether the "prime mover" of capitalism was changes in production or in circulation. The example of South Asian studies shows how, from…

  • Incense and Industry

    Andrew B Liu•ARTICLE•Past & Present•2016•Citada por: 2

Rural tea production in late Qing China (1644–1911) was far more dynamic than previously imagined, both by observers at the time and by subsequent historical scholarship. In the tea districts of Huizhou in the south of the province of Anhui, specifically, tea producers, despite exhibiting few signs of technological breakthrough, became enmeshed in the social dynamics of endless capital accumulation, distinguished by an obsessive fixation on produ…

Scholars of the empire (1644-1911) have conventionally divided its into two halves: first, the High Qing that lasted until the Qianlong emperor's death in 1799; second, a slow nineteenth-century decline culminating in the regime's collapse. Consequently, according historian Wensheng Wang…

This paper looks at the origins of the British tea industry of India from the standpoint of colonial and semicolonial involvement in, respectively, British India and Qing China. The imposition of the tea industry in Assam was integrally tied to the wars in East Asia fought in order to open markets for the movement of opium and other commodities. British officials championed both policies in the name of modern economic progress, liberalizing trade…
