“Comparative Political Theory” and the Displacement of Politics
Over the course of the past few decades, comparative political theory has acquired a measure of institutional legitimacy and intellectual recognition as part of the ongoing, interdisciplinary challenge to prevailing academic categories, coordinates, and borders. This arrival has been accompanied by a conspicuous focus on methodology both by those who claim the mantle of comparative political theory and those who reject it. The following reflectio…

Spectacles of Sovereignty in Digital Time
The ISIS videos staging the executions of James Foley and Steven Sotloff are usually understood as devices to deter, recruit, and “sow terror.” Left unanswered are questions about how these videos work; to whom they are addressed; and what about them can so continuously bring new audiences into existence. The evident durability of ISIS despite the imminent defeat of its state, coupled with the political impact of these particular videos, make the…
Humiliation and the Political Mobilization of Masculinity
Islamist rhetoric about the humiliation of Islam and American rhetoric about national humiliation have been energized by disparate events in recent years, from the photographs of American soldiers in Mogadishu, Somalia to the invasion of Iraq, the “Innocence of Muslims” video to the attacks on 9/11. At the same time, there’s been an explosion of scholarship on humiliation as a driver of international conflict and political violence in general, an…
Roxanne L. Euben
The attacks on September 11, 2001 released a barrage of public rhetoric characterizing the 19 Muslim hijackers as evil fanatics “in love with death” and animated by a “hatred of freedom.” A spate of scholarship, op-ed articles, and policy papers devoted to anatomizing the “problems with Islam”—a propensity for violence and authoritarianism, an archaic conflation of religious and political domains, the pent-up rage of Muslims “left behind” by mode…

Jihad and Political Violence
Jihad is neither simply a blind and bloody-minded scrabble for temporal power nor solely a door through which to pass into the hereafter. Rather it is a form of political action in which ... the pursuit of immortality is inextricably linked to a profoundly this-worldly endeavor—the founding or re-creation of a just community on earth

Killing (for) Politics
A firm grasp of Islamic fundamentalism has often eluded Western political observers, many of whom view it in relation to social and economic upheaval or explain it away as an irrational reaction to modernity. Here Roxanne Euben makes new sense of this belief system by revealing it as a critique of and rebuttal to rationalist discourse and post-Enlightenment political theories. Euben draws on political, postmodernist, and critical theory, as well …

Premodern, Antimodern or Postmodern? Islamic and Western Critiques of Modernity
The steadily increasing appeal of Islamic fundamentalist ideas has often been characterized as a premodern, antimodern or, more recently, as a postmodern phenomenon. To explore the relationship of Islamist political thought to modernity, and the usefulness of the terminology of “modernity” to situate and understand it, this article explores two comparisons. The first is a comparison across time, and involves the juxtaposition of a prominent ninet…
Comparative Political Theory
In this manuscript I analyze the political theory of an influential Islamic fundamentalist theorist. From this analysis I argue that the fundamentalist insistence on divine sovereignty must be understood, in part, as a rejection of and rebuttal to modern theories of political sovereignty and the rationalist epistemology that justifies them. This suggests that fundamentalist ideas should not be dismissed as either irrational or purely epiphenomena…

When Worldviews Collide
In this comparative analysis 1 argue that rational actor theory and Islamic fundamentalism hold competing, indeed inimical assumptions about what human behavior is and should be. Such differences suggest two interrelated points: first, the rational actor model reaches its limits when applied to fondamentalism. Second, such limitations must be seen as an expresion of a deeper clash of worldviews, a clash between a world defined by divine sovereign…
