Thus we read these lines in the manuscripts and in the printed editions (with minor variations that are irrelevant to our present purpose); thus the lines were read in the Middle Ages and, perhaps, already in antiquity
Rise and Fall
RISE AND FALL* (Review article) A. WASSERSTEIN With volume 16 of Part II the editors of Aufstieg und Niedergang der Römischen Welt begin the publication of the material relating to religion in the Roman Empire. They deal mostly with the first three imperial centuries but cannot avoid here and there going back to the republican and hellenistic periods. This is inevitable for a number of different reasons: partly because of the nature of this work,…

Greek Scientific Thought
The following is a discussion of some characteristic features of Greek science. In singling out any one such characteristic one is, of course, in danger of over-emphasizing its role and of blacking-out the background of other equally characteristic features, some of which may well be effective in a very different and indeed opposite way. The argument presented here must therefore not be understood as a complete description or analysis of the char…
Some early Greek attempts to square the circle
THE quadrature of the circle, one of the most famous mathematical problems of antiquity no less than of more modern times, appears comparatively early in the history of Greek mathematics. In the gth century it had an established position as one of the three traditional problems, viz. quadrature or rectification of the circle, duplication of the cube and trisection of a given angle. Thinkers as different from each other as Hippocrates of ChiosI An…
Theaetetus and the History of the Theory of Numbers
This famous passage has given rise to much discussion and some perplexity. Theodoras the mathematician is represented by Theaetetus as proving the irrationality of the square roots of the (non-square) numbers from 3 to 17: ‘He took the separate cases up to the root of 17 square feet; and there, for some reason, he stopped.’ (Transl. Cornford.) The passage is of great importance in the history of Greek mathematics for more than one reason. Theaete…
The Manuscript Tradition of Statius' Silvae
In a recent issue of this journal ( C.Q. , N.S. vii [1957], 47–52) Professor P. Thielscher criticizes my hypothesis concerning the manuscript tradition of the Silvae of Statius (see C.Q. , N.S. iii [1953], 69–78). He censures me for what he calls my ‘errors’ and ‘mistakes’. Here are my answers
