Rassifizierende Humandifferenzierung.
African Popular Culture Enters the Global Mainstream
Africa was long seen primarily as an importer of global cultural forms, but it is now on the verge of becoming a major exporter of popular culture to the world
Mapping out an anthropology of defrauding and faking
In the aftermath of the global economic crisis and the rise of post‐truth in media and politics, trust and authenticity appear as fleeting qualities, having been replaced by suspicions of fraud and fakery. By looking at defrauding and faking as practices and questioning public discourses about them, laden with normative evaluations, as they are, this special issue ethnographically explores everyday interactions and imaginaries, to learn about the…

Turning Rice into Pilau
This essay investigates the remediation of foreign films as it is currently practised in Tanzanian video parlours, by video narrators interpreting these films into Kiswahili. Video narration is a means to appropriate and domesticate foreign audiovisual material in terms of primary orality. Video narration reverses the hierarchy of original and copy insofar as the moving images of the original become mere illustrations of governing local narrative…
A prequel to Nollywood
This article interrogates the history of the photo novel in Africa with particular reference to African Film, a magazine of almost pan-African circulation, published between 1968 and 1972 in South Africa. Featuring the adventures of Lance Spearman, an African crime fighter, the magazine was read widely across Anglophone Africa, from Nigeria and Ghana to South Africa, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. After a brief introduction to the history of…
Conversion on Screen
This article discusses several northern Nigerian video feature films that depict stories about conversion to Islam. Based on three months of fieldwork in 2003 and a close reading of Hausa videos and video magazines, it suggests reading these films against the backdrop of the current process of and cultural revitalization associated with reformist Islam and the reintroduction of the shari'a legal code within the northern states of Nigeria since 19…

DNA sequence of the mitochondrial hypervariable region II from the Neandertal type specimen
The DNA sequence of the second hypervariable region of the mitochondrial control region of the Neandertal type specimen, found in 1856 in central Europe, has been determined from 92 clones derived from eight overlapping amplifications performed from four independent extracts. When the reconstructed sequence is analyzed together with the previously determined DNA sequence from the first hypervariable region, the Neandertal mtDNA is found to fall o…
Neandertal DNA Sequences and the Origin of Modern Humans
Global Patterns of Linkage Disequilibrium at the CD4 Locus and Modern Human Origins
Haplotypes consisting of alleles at a short tandem repeat polymorphism (STRP) and an Alu deletion polymorphism at the CD4 locus on chromosome 12 were analyzed in more than 1600 individuals sampled from 42 geographically dispersed populations (13 African, 2 Middle Eastern, 7 European, 9 Asian, 3 Pacific, and 8 Amerindian). Sub-Saharan African populations had more haplotypes and exhibited more variability in frequencies of haplotypes than the North…
