Before Desire
Childhood gender nonconformity (CGN) is a well-established developmental correlate of adult sexual orientation, yet evidence from Southern Europe remains scarce. This article examines how young gay men in Spain recall early gender-atypical preferences and embodied practices, and the social responses these elicited before the emergence of sexual desire or identity labels. Drawing on sixteen in-depth biographical interviews analyzed through an indu…
Contentious legality in decentralized governance
The Spanish case highlights both the innovative potential and the structural fragility of bottom-up drug policy experimentation. It shows how legal ambiguity within multilevel governance can enable civic innovation yet remain vulnerable to centralized judicial closure
The Network Expression of a Roma Diaspora
Despite the longstanding debates among ethnographers and policymakers regarding the social organization of the Roma-the largest and most marginalized native ethnocultural minority in Europe-quantitative analyses are limited. This is partly due to a unique combination of social closure and spatial dispersion of most Roma groups, exacerbated by their recent massive migration from Central and Eastern Europe. Here, we implement a novel methodology th…

Breaking secular endogamy. The growth of intermarriage among the Gitanos/Calé of Spain (1900–2006)
For over five centuries the Gitanos/Calé of Spain have shown a marked preference for marrying within their ethnocultural community. In the last decades, however, various Gitano groups have experienced a rise in intermarriage that is transforming their families, their identities and their interactions with mainstream society. This paper analyzes this historical transformation in an area of Andalusia that shows some of the highest concentrations of…
Marriage and the reproductive regime of a digitally connected Roma diaspora
This paper analyzes the marriage, family, and reproductive regimes prevalent in a Roma group that, in the post-socialist period, has moved from Romania to over 16 countries in Western Europe and North America. It is based on a long-term collaborative ethnography that allowed the detailed reconstitution of 807 unions held from 1938 to 2021. Family networks in this diaspora have today a transnational character and maintain an intense social interac…
Culture and group-functional punishment behaviour
Humans often ‘altruistically’ punish non-cooperators in one-shot interactions among genetically unrelated individuals. This poses an evolutionary puzzle because altruistic punishment enforces cooperation norms that benefit the whole group but is costly for the punisher. One key explanation is that punishment follows a social-benefits logic: it is eminently normative and group-functional (drawing on cultural group selection theories). In contrast,…
Consanguineous marriages among Andalusian Gitanos/Calé
Using data from the family and genealogical reconstitutions of the Gitano population of 22 contiguous localities in eastern Andalusia, Spain, this study analysed the intensity, structure and historical evolution of consanguinity in 3056 couples formed from 1925 to 2006. Of these unions, 54.8% were consanguineous, and 28.7% involved relatives up to and including second cousins, resulting in a mean coefficient of inbreeding up to the third degree α…

Roma populations and health inequalities
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the emergence of “Roma health and wellbeing” as a focus of attention in European research and in policy and the possible detrimental consequences of action founded on a generic representation of “Roma health.” Design/methodology/approach Based on discussions with and research conducted by scholars who work directly with Roma communities across European regions from a wide range of academic disciplin…
The Evolution of Consanguineous Marriages in the Archdiocese of Granada, Spain (1900–1979)
In the 20th century Spain maintained some of the highest rates of consanguineous marriage in Europe. In many regions these rates were still high in the 1950s and 1960s but then decreased rapidly, and by the 1970s a generalized transformation in mating patterns was under way. In the following decades the marriage of persons closely related by birth became rare. Consanguinity and inbreeding have been much studied in Spain but almost exclusively in …

The long agony of Hispanoromani. The remains of Caló in the speech of Spanish Gitanos
Caló (also known as Romanó) is the mixed speech that Spanish Gitanos developed by combining a Romani lexicon with Spanish morphosyntax (Catalan or Basque in the regional varieties). For two centuries, Caló has been portrayed as being in a terminal state, but there is a lack of data on the knowledge and use of Caló by Gitano speakers. To begin filling this void, we developed a specific questionnaire that includes 355 key Caló words with their Span…
Nominal Assimilation
In 1783, the King of Spain Carlos III enacted the last Royal Order for the control and assimilation of Gitanos or Calé. The law required that local authorities listed the Gitanos living in their counties. The resulting census is the most important document on the Spanish Romani written during the ancien régime. Unfortunately, its data has never been studied in depth. This paper analyzes the surnames of the 12,037 Gitano persons identified in the …
Los apellidos de los gitanos españoles en los censos de 1783-85 (The family names of Gitanos or Spanish Romani in the listings of 1783-85)
The last Royal Order addressed to Spanish Gypsies in 1783 required that local authorities listed all Gitanos residing in their counties ("partidos"). By mid 1785 a Census had been collected that included data on 12.037 persons, 756 of whom had died. These lists form the most important document on the Gitano minority the Ancien Régime. Unfortunately, they have not been studied in depth. As a first outcome of such a study, this paper analyzes the f…
Marriage practices and ethnic differentiation
Spanish Gypsies [gitanos] are one of the main minorities and distinctive cultural groups in Spain. They constitute approximately 1.5% of the total population (500,000–700,000) and live in all regions and provinces. Here we present a model of the differential nuptiality patterns of gitanos, showing the importance of their marriage and kinship practices as a source of their physical and cultural reproduction. We analyze genealogical reconstructions…
The Spread of Intravenous Drug Use and Aids in a Neighborhood in Spain
This article traces the process of the adoption of intravenous drug use in a Madrid neighborhood between 1978 and 1990 and how that process influenced the local spread of HIV/AIDS. During this period, intravenous drug use reached massive proportions in Spain and became a main factor in the spread of HIV/AIDS in the country. Data collected on 245 intravenous drug users and the motives and circumstances of first intravenous drug use in 124 cases sh…
