Neolithic occupations (c. 5200-3400 cal BC) at Isolino Virginia (Lake Varese, Italy) and the onset of the pile-dwelling phenomenon around the Alps
Neolithic pile dwelling sites are known particularly well North of the Alps, with a boom starting from ca. 4300 cal BC. These sites are famous for the excellent preservation conditions of organic material (wooden tools, textiles, fruit remains and foodstuffs have been preserved in many of them), but their origin is still unclear. In Europe, only three reliably-dated settlements of this type are documented in the Early Neolithic: La Marmotta ca. 5…
Plant foods, stone tools and food preparation in prehistoric Europe
The transformation of food ingredients into meals corresponds to complex choices resulting from the interplay of environmental and cultural factors: available ingredients, technologies of transformation, cultural perceptions of food, as well as taste and food taboos. Project PLANTCULT (ERC Consolidator Grant, GA 682529) aims to investigate prehistoric culinary cultures from the Aegean to Central Europe by focusing on plant foods and associated fo…
Ethnogrinding Database
This study advances research carried out during the creation of a bibliographic database of ethnological information regarding hand milling systems in the framework of the ERC-Project PLANTCULT Identifying the Food Cultures of Ancient Europe: an interdisciplinary investigation of plant ingredients, culinary transformation and evolution through time led by S.M. Valamoti. The main aims of the database are to collect information linked to the proces…
The storage of pulses during the Bronze and Iron Ages in the East of the Iberian Peninsula
Storage in Prehistory
Underground silo storage during the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages
Middle Neolithic farming of open-air sites in SE France
Previous reviews of Middle Neolithic agricultural practice (4400–3500 cal bc ) in southern France have highlighted a change in crop assemblages after 4000 cal bc , with a reduction of naked wheat and an increase of emmer and partly of einkorn. The recent investigation of three wells from the site of Les Bagnoles (4250–3800 cal bc ) in the periphery of the southern Rhône valley yielded an unprecedented amount of waterlogged uncharred and charred p…
From the earliest farmers to the first urban centres
The evolution of storage features in prehistory has been linked to larger socio-economic and demographic changes. The investigation of such an evolution in the archaeological record, however, is restricted in scope, both geographically and chronologically. This article offers a comparative approach to understanding the development of Neolithic to Late Iron Age (c. 5600-50 BC) farming communities in north-eastern Iberia, based on diachronic change…
