William Blake and the Cartographic Imagination
Issues in Australian Foreign Policy July to December 2023
From our first day in Government, we have worked to make Australia stronger in the world and safer at home. Investing in our capability and investing in our relationships, our deterrence and our diplomacy. And bringing both to our presence in this region. Engaging with our Pacific family with respect, reinvesting in development assistance, working with our neighbours and partners to promote peace, security, stability and prosperity right across t…
Art Maps and Cities
Oronce Fine and L’esphere du monde
The article explores tensions between cosmography and topography in maps and writings of Oronce Fine (1492-1555). Editor and illustrator of two editions of De sphaera of Johannes Sacrobosco (1517 and 1527), author of De sphaera mundi (1542), Fine composed treatises of cosmography and mathematics in French. Affiliating with typographer-publisher Michel de Vasconsan, he published a vernacular edition titled L’esphere du monde. Headed by a poem cele…
Du Bellay and the Catchword
Joachim Du Bellay, a poet of contradiction, is known in his later verse for mastering a sculpted and “cold” style of writing. This article proposes that in conjunction with a unique typography and formatting of the poems in their first editions, catchwords (or réclames), seemingly isolated and fragmentary marks at the end of gatherings of signatures, punctuate the verse and, now and again, become a function of its force. Appearing as they do and …

Fiche de fragment
In L'Entretien infini (1969), in two essays on René Char, Blanchot engages what he calls a parole de fragment, an open-ended and ever-approximate form of writing that disorients, displaces, and goes adrift into exile. He finds in Char "îles de sens" [islands of sense], a flicker of sensory fragments, a writing that "speaks essentially in things and in words." He ends the essay through reference to Parole en archipel, the title Char accords to poe…
Healing is not linear
The purpose of this study was to describe the day‐to‐day healing processes of women who experienced undergraduate sexual violence. We engaged 19 women in a photo‐elicitation experience with follow‐up individual interviews to identify themes of both healing and darker moments in survivors' everyday lives. Healing was found to function on a continuum influenced by darker moments (i.e., moments that elicited fear, anxiety, loneliness, guilt, anger, …

The stretched rubber band
This article analyses the development of residential capitalism and financialisation in Australia. It outlines the series of economic vulnerabilities developing in the financial system, centred on household debt and inflated property markets. It then analyses why policy-makers have done so little to restrict the growth of household debt and house prices. I argue that financial policy-makers have underestimated the financial vulnerabilities buildi…

Deleuze and the Filmic Diagram
This article aims to consider how the ‘diagram’ or ‘little machine’ is integral to the dissociative, at once polyvocal and polymorphous writing that marks the work of Blanchot and that, in turn, informs the disjunctive – hence critical and productive – operation within the register of Deleuze's writings on cinema. I shall consider a number of Deleuze's ‘keywords’ or recurring formulas as diagrams, that is, as intermediate configurations at once v…

Whatever Happened to Industry Policy in Australia
Since the 1980s and early 1990s, there have been few constructive developments towards a comprehensive and coherent productivity-enhancing agenda. Labor governments have often provided rhetorical support but have fought over whether industry policy represents a new protectionism or market-enhancing development policy. The Coalition in opposition and in office has generally opposed the idea of industry policy, but has continued to support ad hoc a…

A Devil in Diversion
A close reading of chapters 3 and 4 of the third volume of Montaigne's Essais reveals that within the lexical matter, there is a strategic deployment of mathematical and geometrical signs. Words and their spacings are literally riddled with numerical forms that reorient-and even multiply-the vectors of meanings of the essays themselves. Gematria becomes a working principle of the chapters that draw attention to the force of their form. In the Ess…
From Antidote to Anecdote
From Antidote to Anecdote: Montaigne on Dissemblance Tom Conley (bio) In our day a child preparing for a spelling bee might be prone to confuse an anecdote with an antidote. The two words have such a similar ring that the speller might be tempted to find a hidden truth in the difference between the –ti– and –ec– that distinguish their middle syllables. In the age of analogy, in what might be the childhood or adolescence of the printed book, inter…

Le métier d’écrire
Globalization, schmobalization
In recent years, books or articles on globalization often begin with apologies. It is as though continuing to find globalization interesting or relevant is similar to an addiction or, perhaps worse, that it represents a vested interest in a once trendy phenomenon that is well past its use-by date. These apologies make the reader suspicious that the author is trying to squeeze out one more publication from a labour of love. A colleague recently to…
Visual Culture Questionnaire
1. It has been suggested that the interdisciplinary project of is no longer organized on the model of (as were the disciplines of art history, architectural history, film history, etc.) but on the model of anthropology. Hence, it is argued by some that visual culture is in an eccentric (even, at times, antagonistic) position with regard to the new art history with its social-historical and semiotic imperatives and models of context and text
The Domestic Politics of Globalisation
This article provides a domestic-focused account of the impact of globalisation on Australia. The overriding aim of government in recent years has been to educate the population about the imperatives of globalisation and the need for economic liberal policy change. Labor succeeded in breaking down Australia's protectionist policy structure but both Labor and Coalition governments have found it difficult to manage globalising policy change. The Ho…

The state of globalisation and the globalisation of the state
This article examines how to evaluate claims about the extent and impact of globalisation. A focus on the significance of earlier phases of globalisation is essential, but underestimating the importance and scope of recent developments is the wrong lesson to learn from a more historically informed analysis. While it is necessary to maintain a healthy scepticism towards endings, inevitability and irreversibility, it is important to remain open to …

Cinema and its Discontents
Cinema and its Discontents:Jacques Rancière and Film Theory Tom Conley (bio) Jacques Rancière may have entered a French pantheon of film theory in 2001 after his publication of an array of essays on classical and contemporary films in La fable cinématographique. In that book Rancière posited cinema to be "to the storytelling art what truth is to falsehood."1 Cinema rejects the Aristotelian poetics of fables and fabulation by reconfiguring the Gre…

Globalisation and the Politics of Persuasion and Coercion
This paper argues that an economic liberal discourse of globalisation has been pivotal to the policy‐making process in Australia over the past 15 or so years. Both Labor and Coalition Governments have aimed to restrict the electoral fall‐out from the process of restructuring by persuading Australians that the world economy has forced particular policy changes and made alternative economic policy choices unviable. Policy‐makers act to influence co…
Thevet Revisits Guanabara
“Il nous faudroit des topographes qui fissent narration particuliere des endroits où ils ont esté” [We need topographers who can provide detailed accounts of the places where they have been].1 In his essay on “Cannibals,” the early version of his celebrated plea for objective accounts of the fauna, flora, local cultures, and singular features of the New World, Montaigne admonished a tradition of reports made by cosmographers who bore false witnes…

Historians have defined film noir as a predominant form of Hollywood cinema, generally situated from 1941 to 1957, which evolves from the gangster film but projects somber moods of disillusionment following the Second World War. The relations that film noir holds with theatre are important and multifarious when viewed from a theoretical standpoint. The genre develops a of cruelty defined by spatial and economic confinement, social and temporal im…

Ideological Warefare
In the middle sixties a great debate was suscitated by a series of polemics between Raymond Picard and Roland Barthes. Barthes published his Sur Racine, a study incorporating Freudian psychology, anthropological concepts of totemism and phenomenology in an attempt to renovate our long-founded appreciation of the greatest French classical playwright; Raymond Picard, author of a biography of Racine and editor of the Pleiade volume of Racine's Oeuvr…

be obvious that no work in the area of narrative analysis can afford to ignore the fundamental contributions of Northrop Frye, the codifica tion by A. J. What Is Criticism
Images of Regression
R EADERS of this issue of New Literary History will no doubt find in Yves Bonnefoy's inaugural lecture at the College de France the optical center of the journal, both its central focus and its vanishing point. A poet who writes an incised, scriptural poetry of uncanny materiality, Bonnefoy is also a profound critic of the plastic arts. Painting, color, and graphic accretions pervade his verse, as does a haunting relation between the images of Pi…
