The Evolution of Occupational Social Work
The evolution of occupational social work from its beginnings in welfare capitalism, through the human relations movement in the 1930s and 1940s, and into the occupational alcoholism programs and employee assistance programs of the last decade is surveyed. The article offers a broad definition of occupational social work and justifies that definition on the basis of a systemic view of the modern U.S. workplace, which is buffeted by dynamic forces
The Employee as Client
The clients' reports provide invaluable insights into the EAP in which they participated. Overall, they reaffirmed the viability of occupational alcoholism programs as an effective intervention in problem drinking. They did raise serious questions about the fit between the theoretical expectations of EAPs and actual practice. The author explores the widespread avoidance of the identification and treatment of alcoholism by the social work profession. The article examines the underlying causes of this avoidance and suggests guidelines to overcome the organizational and the professional barriers that have kept alcoholics from seeking social work treatment
