Design and implementation of data quality controls in the EQ-DAPHNIE study
The quality control measures implemented throughout the EQ-DAPHNIE project effectively addressed common issues such as bot responses, speeding, and missing data, resulting in generally high-quality and representative datasets. However, variability across countries underscores the need to account for quality indicators when using the data for norm-setting or cross-country comparisons
The Association of Family Risk Factors with Suicidality Among Adolescent Primary Care Patients
Childhood Emotional Abuse, Cruel Physical Punishment, and Anxiety among Adolescent Primary Care Patients
Prolonged Grief Disorder
BACKGROUND: Bereavement is a universal experience, and its association with excess morbidity and mortality is well established. Nevertheless, grief becomes a serious health concern for a relative few. For such individuals, intense grief persists, is distressing and disabling, and may meet criteria as a distinct mental disorder. At present, grief is not recognized as a mental disorder in the DSM-IV or ICD-10. The goal of this study was to determin…
Stigmatization and Receptivity to Mental Health Services Among Recently Bereaved Adults
Severe grief symptoms, treatment receptivity, attitudes about grief, and stigmatization concerns were assessed in a community-based sample of 135 widowed participants in the Yale Bereavement Study. There was a statistically significant association between the severity of grief symptoms and reported negative reactions from friends and family members. However, more than 90% of the respondents with complicated grief, a severe grief disorder, reporte…
Psychiatric Disorders in Adolescence and Early Adulthood and Risk for Child-Rearing Difficulties During Middle Adulthood
Data from a community-based longitudinal study were used to investigate the associations of parental psychiatric disorders evident by early adulthood with child-rearing behavior during middle adulthood. A series of psychiatric assessments was conducted during the adolescence (mean ages 14 and 16) and early adulthood (mean age 22) of 153 males and 224 females. Child-rearing behavior was assessed at mean parental age 33 and mean offspring age 8. Pa…
Predicting conflict within romantic relationships during the transition to adulthood
We conducted a retrospective study between 1997 and 2000 with 200 participants in the Children in the Community Study at their mean age of 29 (range: 27–31 years). Participants completed detailed narrative interviews about their transition to adulthood and described monthly levels of partner conflict that had occurred between ages 17 and 27. Data from these interviews were used to investigate the developmental trajectory and predictors of conflic…
Gender differences in the age-changing relationship between instrumentality and family contact in emerging adulthood
Data from the Children in the Community Transitions Study were used to examine gender differences in the impact of family contact on the development of finance and romance instrumentality from ages 17 to 27 years. Family contact decreased among both men and women across emerging adulthood, although it decreased more rapidly in men than in women. Both finance and romance instrumentality increased for men and women across emerging adulthood. The gr…
The Course and Psychosocial Correlates of Personality Disorder Symptoms in Adolescence
Anti-social Parental Behaviour, Problematic Parenting and Aggressive Offspring Behaviour During Adulthood
Data from a 25-year community-based prospective longitudinal study were used to investigate the role of problematic parenting in the association between a history of anti-social parental behaviour and subsequent offspring aggression during adulthood. Parents with a history of anti-social behaviour were significantly more likely than other parents were to engage in two or more types of problematic child-rearing behaviour. Problematic parenting was…
Intergenerational transmission of partner violence
An unselected sample of 543 children was followed over 20 years to test the independent effects of parenting, exposure to domestic violence between parents (ETDV), maltreatment, adolescent disruptive behavior disorders, and emerging adult substance abuse disorders (SUDs) on the risk of violence to and from an adult partner. Conduct disorder (CD) was the strongest risk for perpetrating partner violence for both sexes, followed by ETDV, and power a…
Childhood Adversities, Interpersonal Difficulties, and Risk for Suicide Attempts During Late Adolescence and Early Adulthood
BACKGROUND: Data from a community-based longitudinal study were used to investigate the association between childhood adversities, interpersonal difficulties during adolescence, and suicide attempts during late adolescence or early adulthood. METHODS: A community sample of 659 families from Upstate New York was interviewed in 1975, 1983, 1985 to 1986, and 1991 to 1993. During the 1991-1993 interview, the mean age of the offspring was 22 years. RE…

Psychiatric Disorders Associated with the Onset and Persistence of Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder During Adolescence
Violence in Prison Systems
This article speaks to several dimensions of the correctional enterprise and discusses violence from the perspective of an administrator who has viewed the criminal justice system “up close and personal.” The author argues that the system is in a perilous quagmire and many problems that affect blacks and minorities are structurally rooted. These include: (1) violence against black males in the criminal justice system, (2) sentencing for drug use,…
A longitudinal investigation of social causation and social selection processes involved in the association between socioeconomic status and psychiatric disorders.
Childhood Abuse and Neglect
A longitudinal analysis of risk factors for child maltreatment
Objective: To identify demographic, family, parent, and child factors prospectively associated with risk for child abuse and neglect among families in the community, using data on child maltreatment obtained from both official records and youth self-reports. Method: Surveys assessing demographic variables, family relationships, parental behavior, and characteristics of parents and children were administered to a representative sample of 644 famil…
A Modwied Scoring Algorithm for the PDQ-R
A study was conducted to investigate the extent to which adolescents diagnosed with one or more personality disorders on a self-report instrument are at an elevated risk for psychiatric symptomatology and psychoactive substance abuse. A modified version of the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-Revised (PDQ-R), the Revised Hopkins Symptom Checklist (SCL-90-R), and a standard retrospective substance use diary were administered to 441 undergradua…
Neurodegenerative diseases
OBJECTIVES: To identify potential occupational risk factors, this study examined the occupational occurrence of various neurodegenerative diseases. METHODS: Death certificates from 27 states in the National Occupational Mortality Surveillance System were evaluated for 1982 to 1991. Proportionate mortality ratios were calculated by occupation for presenile dementia, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and motor neuron disease. RESULTS: Exces…
