The Cultural Politics and Political Culture of Merip and Beyond

In this paper, I examine the emergence of pop rai in western Algeria during the 1970s and the subsequent transformation of rai into a very different sound, and a national and international phenomenon. The study is based in part on an analysis of previously hard-to-find pop rai recordings now available on the internet. The article examines three songs from the rai and rap domains which have all, to varying degrees, been hits in France: ‘Partir Loin' by 113 with Reda Taliani, ‘Don't Panik' by Médine, and ‘Même Pas Fatigué' by Khaled with Magic System. I happened to travel to New York City on May 30, 2002, the day that ceremonies were held to mark the completion of the clearing of the rubble at the site of the World Trade Center. At a downtown law firm's expense, I was staying at the Ritz Carleton Battery Park, and could see Ground Zero from my hotel room.
