The article discusses animal burials in the mounds of the Zhetyasar culture in the lower reaches of the Syr Darya River. In three cases, these are dog burials. The position of the animal carcass was different in all three cases. Only in one burial mound a dog was buried with a human. Sacrificial cult complex is described separately: the burial of a ram with implements, an improvised altar of fire and a pit in the center, where repeated animal sac…
The First Results of on Analytic Study of Materials of the Jetyasar Archaeological Culture (Altyn-Asar 4i burial ground)
The analytic study was performed on the materials of the Jetyasar culture from the excavations of the Altyn-Asar-4i burial ground (excavations of the Khorezm expedition of the Institute of Ethnography of the USSR Academy of Sciences under the direction of L. M. Levina; storage of the State Oriental Museum). It included study of the chemical composition of artefacts from the burials made of non-ferrous metals as well contextual study of anthropolo…
Babish-mola — the Capital City of Antiquity in the Lower Reaches of the Syr Darya
The article publishes the results of several years of excavations at the Babish-Mola settlement, on the territory of the ancient delta of the Syr Darya, where the agricultural Chirikrabat archaeological culture was widespread in the second half of the I millennium BC. During the three seasons of field research, the premises and a section of the bypass corridor in the north-western part of the building of the palace and temple complex — the “Big H…
Archaeological research on the settlement of Bol’shoy K’irk-K’iz in the Right-Bank Chorasmia in 2021
The article summarizes the preliminary results of the research conducted at the settlement of Bolshoy Kyrk-Kyz in 2021. The stratigraphic excavation within the citadel of the settlement revealed three construction horizons corresponding to the most intense period of the monument's life - the first half of the I millennium AD. This date is determined by a very characteristic ceramic complex obtained during excavations. There is a group of ceramics…
A Quantitative Assessment of the Topography of the Berkut-kalinsky Oasis (Chorasmia) in Relation to the Goals of Historical and Archaeological Research
The spatial and economic structure of the Berkut-kalinsky oasis was investigated in this study with the using of statistical methods. As a result, an oasis scheme was drawn up, taking into account the location of various objects distributed into classes, which is important for further paleoeconomic analysis. Two parameters are considered as classifiers describing the economic power of the castle – the total area occupied by the monument and the a…
Pottery making in the South Aral region (concerning the question of the organization of handicrafts in antiquity)
This paper is devoted to the organizational forms of the pottery-making handicraft in the territory of the South Aral region. Three types of pottery-making have been distinguished which differed in terms of the production volumes and locations of the workshops relative the settlement sites. On the basis of analysis of the available evidence, the author comes to the conclusion that each of the distinguished types of production corresponds to a def…
Fortification of early medieval structures of the Berkut-Kalinsky oasis as indicator of socio-economic processes
The article discusses in detail the systems of fortification of early medieval castles and estates of the Berkut-Kalinsky oasis. When preparing this article, a unified database was formed, for which the card index of the castles of the Berkut-Kalinsky oasis was used, compiled by E.E. Nerazik in the early 60s. At one time it was not published in full and is currently stored in the archive of the Institute of Ethnography and Anthropology of the Rus…
Using the USSR General Staff maps to determine the geographical coordinates in archeology
The main problem of archaeological plans drawn in the mid-20th century is that almost all of them have poor accuracy of spatial localisation of objects. Simple estimates show that the error relatively to the actual position of the site can reach several hundred meters on the Earth surface. Because of this, only large, well-preserved ob-jects can be identified using archaeological plans. If the monument is small and poorly preserved, then it is im…
Astronomical Orientation of Architectural Monuments of Khorezm
The paper is aimed at studying the astronomical orientation of Khorezmic architectural monuments. By the term «astronomical orientation», the authors understand the alignment of the building elements with astronomically significant directions corresponding to the directions of the world, sunrise and/or sunset azimuths at solstices and azimuths of the rising/setting of the Moon at its northern and southern extremes. Analysis of the accuracy of mon…
Tableware in the Hellenistic Tradition from the City of Kampyr Tepe in Ancient Bactria (Uzbekistan)
Slipped and unslipped wares from Kampyr Tepe dated to the Hellenistic–Seleucid and Greco‐Bactrian periods stylistically resemble tableware from the Greek tradition. Since two pottery workshops have been recovered at the site, the aim is to shed light on the provenance and the production and consumption patterns of the tableware, as well as on the degree of technological influence from Hellenistic–Mediterranean traditions. The archaeometric charac…
