  • Dostoevsky's Democracy

    Nancy Ruttenburg•BOOK•Dostoevsky's Democracy•2010

Dostoevsky's Democracy offers a major reinterpretation of the life and work of the great Russian writer by closely reexamining the crucial transitional period between the early works of the 1840s and the important novels of the 1860s. Sentenced to death in 1849 for utopian socialist political activity, the 28-year-old Dostoevsky was subjected to a mock execution and then exiled to Siberia for a decade, including four years in a forced labor camp,…

  • “The Human Document”

    Open Access•Nancy Ruttenburg•ARTICLE•Journal of Literary Studies•2009

“The Human Document” examines the representation of reading in Coetzee's novel Elizabeth Costello (2003) as an amoral “conspiracy” or “breathing together” of reader and fictional character. Reading so conceived erases the difference between real and fictional persons, permitting a fluid and promiscuous interpenetration of experience that a reader, at the moment of reading, is powerless to refuse. This circumstance challenges the premise of recent…

    Nancy Ruttenburg•ARTICLE•Poetics Today•2005•Citada por: 1•Referências: 5

During the transitional period between the early works of the late 1840s and production of the "great novels" in the mid-1860s, Dostoevsky confronted the problem of the Russian common people with particular urgency and immediacy. The consolations of the social theories which underlay his earlier political activism-and for which he suffered a decade of Siberian exile, spent partly in a hard-labor camp- withered in the face of actual, enforced cont…

Induites par la conversion du mensonge en verite, les consequences du begaiement de l'innocence dans Billy Budd de Melville remettent en question l'esthetique withmanienne et emersonienne de l'integrite necessaire a la production d'une litterature nationale americaine

  • Silence and Servitude: Bondage and Self-invention in Russia and America, 1780-1861

    Open Access•Nancy Ruttenburg•ARTICLE•Slavic Review•1992•Citada por: 1•Referências: 5

In an 1881 letter to his would-be Russian translator, Walt Whitman described his sense of a mystical resemblance-improbable yet undeniable-between Russian and America, two nations traditionally regarded as not merely geographically but also culturally marginal to the great nations of Europe:You Russians and we Americans;-our countries so distant, so unlike at a first glance ... and yet in certain features, and vastest ones, so resembling each oth…
