  • A functional typology of Dutch insubordinate infinitives

Anouk Van den Stock, Arjen De Wit et al.•ARTICLE•Nederlandse taalkunde•2023

This paper aims to offer a typology of Dutch insubordinate infinitives, which, following Evans’s (2007) definition of insubordination, are defined as ‘the main clause use’ of infinitival constructions. The main objectives of this paper are to provide a pragmatic analysis of these constructions in Dutch and, through cross-linguistic comparison, investigate whether their attested pragmatic functions correspond to the pragmatic functions of (a) insu…

  • Insubordination and lectal variation

Open Access•Sofía Pérez Fernández, Pedro Gras et al.•ARTICLE•Ampersand•2022

This study aims to document the variation of a minor imperative construction in five varieties of Spanish and four discursive genres, and to represent this variation by proposing a constructional network that recognizes different degrees of abstraction in the form of schemas and subschemas. Our data comes from five varieties of Spanish (Argentinian, Caribbean, Chilean, Mexican and Peninsular) and four different genres: two spoken (conversations a…

  • Geographical and discursive variation of discourse-connective que in Spanish

Open Access•Sofía Pérez Fernández, Pedro Gras et al.•ARTICLE•Círculo de lingüística aplicada a…•2022

This study presents a corpus-based analysis of discourse-connective que (DCQ) in five varieties of Spanish and across four different discursive genres. On the one hand, we show that DCQ is not only a spoken phenomenon but at the same time mainly restricted to colloquial language use. On the other hand, the results show that DCQ is more entrenched in the Peninsular variety than in the Latin-American varieties (Mexico shows the lowest overall frequ…

  • Polifuncionalidad y prosodia

Open Access•Pedro Gras, Adrián Cabedo Nebot et al.•ARTICLE•Spanish in Context•2022

    Open Access•Pedro Gras•ARTICLE•Borealis – An International…•2021

  • Semantic polyfunctionality and constructional networks

Open Access•Sofía Pérez Fernández, Pedro Gras et al.•ARTICLE•Constructions and Frames•2021

This paper offers an analysis of insubordinate subjunctive complement clauses (ISCs) in Spanish and aims to contribute to the general debate in Construction Grammar on how to deal with a highly pragmatically specified surface form that expresses several meanings. We explore whether the meanings expressed by ISCs are encoded in the construction or can be derived via independently existing principles of pragmatic interpretation. The results of the …

  • On the interactional dimension of evidentials

    Open Access•Bert Cornillie, Pedro Gras•ARTICLE•Discourse Studies•2015•Citada por: 6•Referências: 22

Spanish has a series of evidential discourse markers that combine the lexical semantics of visual perception with reference to inference or hearsay, for example, evidentemente ‘evidently’, por lo visto ‘visibly, seemingly’, al parecer ‘seemingly’ and se ve (que) ‘one sees that, apparently’. The main aim of this article is to examine the grammatical, semantic and interactional properties of these four evidential discourse markers in informal and f…
