  • Survivor Syndrome

    Open Access•Pingshu Li, James P Guthrie•CHAPTER•Wiley Encyclopedia of Management•2015

The concept of survivor syndrome is a phenomenon associated with layoffs and downsizing. Research suggests that along with those who have been downsized, survivors of these traumatic events are also likely to experience significant and adverse effects. These negative effects are wide ranging and include an erosion of satisfaction, commitment, motivation, trust, performance, creativity, social networks, and work‐life balance.

  • Unions and the Adoption of High Performance Work Systems

    Open Access•Wenchuan Liu, James P Guthrie et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2009•Citada por: 3•Referências: 65

Previous research on the association between unionization and the adoption of high performance work systems (HPWSs) has yielded inconsistent results. Using data from a 2004 multi-industry survey of firms operating in the Republic of Ireland, the authors examine the relationship between employee union membership rates and relative use of HPWSs. They also test arguments that employment security may affect the receptiveness of unions to such HR prac…

Developing effective health care organizations is increasingly complex as a result of demographic changes, globalization, and developments in medicine. This study examines the potential contribution of organizational behavior theory and research by investigating the relationship between systems of human resource management (HRM) practices and effectiveness of patient care in hospitals. • High-Involvement Work Practices, Turnover, and Productivity

    James P Guthrie•ARTICLE•Academy of Management Journal•2001

Study results indicate a positive association between use of high-involvement work practices and employee retention and firm productivity. A disordinal interaction was indicated: employee turnover was associated with decreased productivity when use of high-involvement work practices was high and with increased productivity when use of these practices was low.

  • Individual and contextual influences on self‐assessed training needs

    Open Access•James P Guthrie, CATHERINE E SCHWOERER•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational Behavior•1994•Citada por: 2•Referências: 5

Reliance on self‐assessed training needs for input into decisions regarding training participation and design is increasingly common. Previous study results indicate that perceptions of training utility influence these self‐assessments. In a sample of 380 managers and supervisors, this study found that training self‐efficacy and managerial support positively influenced perceptions of training utility, while educational level was negatively associ…

  • Human Resource Management and Labor Productivity

Deepak K Datta, James P Guthrie et al.

There has been growing interest in the degree to which human resource systems contribute to organizational effectiveness, yet limited research attention has been paid to the contextual conditions that moderate the efficacy of these practices. In this study, we examined how industry characteristics affect the relative importance and value of high-performance work systems. Findings indicate that the impact of these human resources systems on produc…
