Summative Assessment in Higher Education
The article begins with a view of learning and of what its assessment entails, arguing that it is helpful to distinguish between assessment systems primarily intended to provide feedout and those intended to provide feedback. Reliability is important in the academic judgements that higher education institutions pass to employers, graduate schools and other stakeholders. However, there are well-known limits to the levels of reliability that can be reached at reasonable cost and without sacrificing validity. Department-level Cultures and the Improvement of Learning and Teaching
This article argues that good practice in teaching and learning in the English-speaking world may be compromised by structural changes in the higher education system. The impact of these changes is, however, affected by leadership practices and working cultures at the departmental level. These can, it is argued, assist in the development of 'deeper' teaching and learning practices even in a context which may be seen as unfavourable to them. Rejec…

This exploration of the nature of demand for postgraduate information draws on two studies. The first, presented in outline, consists of an exploratory investigation of the information materials that some UK higher education institutions have provided about taught master's programmes in three subject areas.
