Incidence, Risk Factors, and Outcomes of Preterm and Early Term Births
Preterm birth (PTB) and early term birth (ETB) are associated with high risks of perinatal mortality and morbidity. While extreme to very PTBs have been extensively studied, studies on infants born at later stages of pregnancy, particularly late PTBs and ETBs, are lacking. In this study, we aimed to assess the incidence, risk factors, and feto-maternal outcomes of PTB and ETB births in Qatar. We examined 15,865 singleton live births using 12-mont…

Walter Ong and Harold Bloom can help us understand the Hebrew Bible
Certain observations made by Harold Bloom regarding the Hebrew Bible can be considered in the framework of Walter Ong’s multivariate account of western cultural history, including his own discussion of aspects of the Hebrew Bible. By doing this, I create a win-win situation. On the one hand, I use Ong’s various observations to deepen and strengthen Bloom’s observations regarding the Hebrew Bible. On the other hand, I use Bloom’s most pointed obse…
Rehg admirably takes the science wars to a new level
Purpose The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to discuss certain key issues involved in the science wars; second, to review William Rehg's Cogent Science in Context: The Science Wars, Argumentation Theory, and Habermas (Massachusetts Institute of Technology Press, Cambridge, 2009). Bakhtin and Medieval Voices
first of its kind for medieval studies. . . . I cannot imagine that a collection of this caliber would not be consulted regularly by those of us who struggle with questions of interpreting and teaching the literature of the Middle Ages.--R. A. Shoaf, University of Florida This is the first wide-ranging exploration of the theories of the 20th-century Russian critic Mikhail Bakhtin, as they apply to medieval literature. It challenges established wa…
Symposium on Basic Writing, Conflict and Struggle, and the Legacy of Mina Shaughnessy
Two articles in the December 1992 College English presented historical perspectives on the field of Basic Writing. In "Conflict and Struggle: The Enemies or Preconditions of Basic Writing?" Min-Zhan Lu argued for the value of a pedagogy in which conflict and struggle help Basic Writers to reposition themselves; she suggested that resistance to such a pedagogy is traceable to three pioneers in the field, Kenneth Bruffee, Thomas Farrell, and Mina S…

Privacy and the Boundaries of Fabliau in The Miller's Tale
Most Old French fabliaux construct a private universe, one where society's concerns and well-being are subordinated to satisfaction of some character's personal desires, even those of the basest instinctual aspects of psyche.' Characters act for their own interests, and genre rewards most generously those who do so most imaginatively. The genre's two chief narrative topoisexual triumph and physical battery-do not provide a realistic depiction of …
Chaucer's Drama of Style
David Benson's lively new interpretation of Chaucer's great story collection attributes the variety and contrast of the tales to the unique literary style of each narrative. In contrast to the popular dramatic approach, which assumes that the diversity of the tales comes from the supposed psyches of the pilgrim tellers, Benson argues that each tale is a fully formed expression of an individual kind of poetry. Each is constructed on its own distin…
