Study Protocol
This protocol paper describes the methods of a multi‐year study examining individual, community, and structural‐level influences on health among people experiencing homelessness in a mid‐sized Oregon city. We draw on biocultural theory and method to examine three distinct social ecologies of homelessness in the study setting: unsheltered homelessness, temporarily sheltered homelessness, and permanent supportive or transitional housing. Our mixed‐…
Sex and Gender
Defining and Using Gender/Sex in Human Biology
Sex and gender categories are often used by human biologists in hypothesis generation, research design, data analysis, and interpretation. Many studies in human biology thus differentiate samples by “sex” and/or “gender.” But it is unclear to what extent, if any, these terms are defined or clearly operationalized. Through analysis of recent publications in the American Journal of Human Biology we assessed how these terms are defined and used in h…
The Covid-19 global pandemic and allostatic load among a cohort of Black and Latina transgender women living with HIV
This exploratory study investigated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on stress biomarkers and allostatic load for Black and Latina transgender women living with HIV (BLTWLH), as well as COVID-19 infection, hospitalization, and vaccination status. LITE Plus is a longitudinal cohort study of BLTWLH designed to identify pathways linking biopsychosocial stress to HIV co-morbidities. Participants were enrolled between October 2019-June 2022. Descri…
Embodied inequities
BACKGROUND: Chronic pain inequities follow a social power-driven gradient of health, whereby those with less social advantage experience chronic pain more often. Feeling socially supported may reduce the burden of chronic pain. PURPOSE: To take an intersectional approach to understand inequities in chronic pain in the United States, by testing whether living at different intersections of sexual orientation and gender shape chronic pain through di…
Transgender and Nonbinary People's Perceptions of Their State Context, Gender Minority Stress, and Mental Health
Transgender and nonbinary (TNB) people experience gender minority stressors that adversely affect their mental health and wellbeing, all of which are shaped by sociopolitical contexts. We explored TNB participants' ( N = 150) perceptions of how affirming their state was and associations with minority stress and mental health variables. Qualitative themes included: (1) Degrees of stigma depend on who you are; (2) Stigma persists even with small po…
Mental health, coping, and resilience among transgender and gender diverse people during the 2020 U.S. presidential election
From Gender and Sex to Gender/Sex
Integrating new methods and conceptualizations that recognize the complexity of sex, gender, and their entanglements is critically necessary to advance practice in anthropology. Gender and sex are not static concepts but evolve over time and vary across cultures, influencing societal organization and interpersonal interactions. Recognizing gender and sex as more complex than binary categories is crucial, especially for medical and biocultural ant…
Legal Gender Affirmation, Psychological Distress, and Physical Health Issues
An Examination of Predictors of Prejudice Against Transgender Individuals
We examined associations between prejudice toward transgender people, aggression proneness, history of family violence, contact and closeness with transgender people, and education about issues that impact transgender individuals. We also examined the moderating effects of contact, education, and closeness on the relations between aggression and history of family violence with prejudice. There were 360 participants (M age = 31.34, SD = 12.47, ran…
Trans and Gender Diverse People’s Experience Wearing Face Masks During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Biocultural approaches to transgender and gender diverse experience and health
Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people are increasingly visible in U.S. communities and in national media. With this increased visibility, access to gender affirming healthcare is also on the rise, particularly for urban youth. Political backlash and entrenchment in a gender binary, however, continue to marginalize TGD people, increasing risk for health disparities. The 2016 National Institute of Health recognition of sexual and gender minor…
Challenging the binary
BACKGROUND: We are witnessing renewed debates regarding definitions and boundaries of human gender/sex, where lines of genetics, gonadal hormones, and secondary sex characteristics are drawn to defend strict binary categorizations, with attendant implications for the acceptability and limits of gender identity and diversity. AIMS: Many argue for the need to recognize the entanglement of gender/sex in humans and the myriad ways that gender experie…
Sexual and gender minority health vulnerabilities during the Covid ‐19 health crisis
Coronavirus 19 (COVID-19), the infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is both transforming and ending lives. In only 7 months (December 2019-July 2020), at least 11 million people have contracted the virus and over 500 000 have died (WHO, 2020). Though its impact is wide, COVID-19's illness and death tolls are felt most acutely by communities experiencing multiple and intersecting (Crenshaw, 198…
The Association between Social Dominance Orientation, Critical Consciousness, and Gender Minority Stigma
Transgender people are exposed to great amounts of discrimination and violence, but research has yet to fully understand what drives stigma towards this community. In this study, we hypothesized that social dominance orientation would be associated with greater gender minority stigma (i.e., stigmatizing views of transgender people), with this association mediated by higher levels of trait aggression and lower levels of critical consciousness. Dat…
Sensitive Health Topics With Underserved Patient Populations
Online focus group discussions provide an anonymous environment to assess sensitive, health-related experiences that may be difficult to discuss utilizing traditional face-to-face modalities, particularly for marginalized populations such as female-to-male trans masculine (TM) transgender individuals. This article reviews the history, advantages, and disadvantages of online focus groups, with an emphasis for research about sensitive issues with s…
To Have Sex or Not to Have Sex? An Online Focus Group Study of Sexual Decision Making Among Sexually Experienced and Inexperienced Gay and Bisexual Adolescent Men
Adolescent gay and bisexual men (AGBM) are at disproportionately high risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, yet healthy sexuality and HIV prevention programs grounded in experiences unique to AGBM (e.g., coming out) are lacking, as is the formative work necessary to inform such programs. A richer understanding of factors informing AGBM's decisions to have or not have sex is needed. To fill this gap in the literature, we conducte…
A Mixed-Methods Study of Condom Use and Decision Making Among Adolescent Gay and Bisexual Males
Associations between transition‐specific stress experience, nocturnal decline in ambulatory blood pressure, and C‐reactive protein levels among transgender men
OBJECTIVES: To characterize challenges experienced during stages of female-to-male sex transition and investigate associations between transition-specific measures of psychosocial stress, nocturnal decline in ambulatory blood pressure (amBP), and changes in C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. METHODS: For this biocultural study, 65 healthy transmen who were using testosterone (T) therapy participated in interviews to assess transition-specific stres…
