Preliminary validity evidence for a rapid fundamental movement skill assessment tool for primary education settings
Introduction Assessment of motor competence is critical for planning and monitoring children's development. However, many assessment tools require time, training, and resources not available to most teachers. We aimed to evaluate the external aspect of construct validity of a rapid product-oriented fundamental movement skill assessment tool designed specifically for primary education settings. Methods Fundamental movement skills of 73 children ag…

Where are preschoolers active in childcare centers? A hot-spot analysis using GIS, GPS and accelerometry data
This study investigated where preschool children were more or less active in outdoor play areas in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) centers using a novel method of combined device-measured physical activity, spatial data and on-site audit data. Preschool children (n = 237) aged 2–5 years from 30 ECEC centers wore accelerometer (Actigraph GT3X+) and Global Positioning System device (Qstarz Q-1000XT) for 7 days. Optimized hot spot analysis…
A latent growth curve model to estimate electronic screen use patterns amongst adolescents aged 10 to 17 years
These results highlight the diverse nature of adolescent screen use and emphasise the need to consider both grade and sex in future research and policy
Capturing the geography of children’s active and sedentary behaviours at home
Children spend much of their time at home, indoors and sedentary. This study reports on the development, exploratory factor analysis, validity and reliability of the HomeSPACE Instrument. The instrument assesses features of the home physical environment that influence children’s sedentary behaviour and physical activity, and the family influences that create this environment. The space and equipment audit achieved good to excellent criterion vali…
Defining arts engagement for population-based health research
Background: The arts and health evidence base needs to be grounded by common terminology and concepts from which original research and comparative studies can be developed. The aim of this study was to elucidate terminology central to understanding the arts and health causal pathway by defining arts engagement via art forms, activities and level (magnitude) of engagement. Method: The study design was cross-sectional. International experts (n = 28…
Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale
It is widely believed that low self-esteem (SE) is associated with greater substance use, although previous research has been unable to support such a relationship consistently. The present study used the "social deviance model" to investigate whether SE was differentially related to substance use for respondents in varying cultural norms. Responses to intensity of tobacco, marijuana, alcohol, and drug use, SE, and cultural norm items from over 2…
Pregnancy in women with perinatally acquired HIV-infection
This is a retrospective comparison of pregnant women with perinatally acquired HIV-infection (PAH) with a cohort of pregnant women with behaviorally acquired HIV-infection (BAH). PAH cases (11 women) included all pregnant adolescents followed at our HIV clinic from January 2000 to January 2009. BAH cases (27 women) were randomly selected from all deliveries within the study period at the same institution. Demographics, mode of delivery, CD4+ coun…

Height, weight and menarcheal age of schoolgirls in Oslo — an update
Every fifth year since 1920 measurements of height and weight of the school-children in Oslo have been centrally processed. We present updates obtained for girls in 1980 and 1985, and in addition results on menarche from 1985. The slow but steady post-war increase in height seems to approach a plateau. For body weight the downward post-war trend has been reversed. Menarcheal age was close to the stable level of about 13.3 years observed since 195…
Menarcheal age for Norwegian women born 1830–1960
Data from birth records from the maternity hospitals in the three main cities in Norway have been used to study the trend in menarcheal age for women born from about 1830 to about 1960. The investigation is based on a sample of 200-300 records around every 10th year from each of the three clinics in partly overlapping time periods relating to a total of 9152 women. The recollected age at menarche fell from just above 16 years for women born aroun…
Test Factor Standardization as a Method of Interpretation
The operation called “interpretation” has long been considered one of the central tools of causal analysis in survey research. It is suggested that interpretation can be effected by using the method of standardization, a method which has a long tradition in demographic and public health research. A simplified procedure for standardization, which makes it more easily adaptable to survey research problems, is presented
